Spider-Man: Homecoming' anticipation thread

Well this isn't surprising. Marvel would never have made a deal with Sony, if it didn't include Peter Parker. He IS Spider-Man to the general audience and long term fans. Sorry Ben Reily/Miles Morales/Miguel O'Hara. Your day may never come.


As to Peter being put back in HS, I'm also not surprised by this. TPTB and TPTW treat Peter Parker likes he's Peter Pan. He can never grow up. He has to remain either a teenage or young twenty something bachelor.


It's why Peter and MJ's marriage was annulled the way it was. Them simply getting a divorce would (In Quesada's mind) "age" the character. So they made a deal with Mephisto so that they're marriage (comic run from 1988-2006) never happened. All to save Aunt Mae's life. Who had been shot by Crossbones. Crossbones put a bullet in Capt America's lower neck/back during Civil War but only managed to hit Mae in the abdomen.

It's also why Aunt Mae has seemingly clung to life all this time. Despite being no spring chicken when Peter first started as Spidey (age 14). Marvel doesn't want Mae to die because it would again, "age" the character. I mean f*ck. It's not like they're are scores of story for them to milk from it. Recently they resorted to shipping Mae and J.Jonah together, in order to give Mae something to do.

JMS' run on TASM had Peter stop being a photographer and had him take a job as a professor at Empire State University. This I thought was a good choice. We know Peter struggled making money with odd jobs and his pictures of Spider-Man at the Bugle, but making Peter a science prof; this really worked for the character. And unsurprisingly, Marvel Comics undid that also and put him back at the Bugle.

*sigh*

If TASM series at Sony had continued, this would've been a great way for Peter to make money and meet MJ. She'd be his student and eventually they would fall for one another.

I expect MCU Spider-Man to retread a lot of the same ground. I know they said they wanted to focus on the pressures of being a teen superhero, but we've already seen that. I'd rather see them take Spider-Man forward and not backward.

Funny thing about Aunt May, she actually originally died in the mid-90s (Amazing Spider-Man 400 if I remember correctly) in the early issues of the Clone Saga. It was also revealed that she knew pretty much all the time that Peter was Spider-Man (A similar thing was revealed in the 80s with Mary Jane, although that has stuck, even if the marriage didn't).


However, after the saga, it was revealed that the May who died was actually an imposter or actress or something hired by Norman Osborn/Green Goblin, and the real May was kidnapped and held by him. The 'real' May also eventually found out Spider-Man's identity (Before the Civil War reveal), although this too was wiped by the "One More Day" stuff.



I wonder if they'll use Aunt May in the new movie. Rosemary Harris sort of played the "classic" Aunt May (Although somewhat less frail and emotionally stronger than the comics version was most of the time), while Sally Field was kind of the younger, more active May from the Ultimate Comics and to a degree the Spectacular Spider-Man cartoons.

 

this time? Because it's going to be the Ultimate spider-Man version of Peter more or less in the movies now.

Which is fine, as Ultimate Peter was awesome. I just hope for Ultimate Gwen stacey who also rocks.

 

Exactly. They have Ultimate Fury, might as well go with the VERY well done Ultimate Spider-Man. And then introduce Ultimate Miles in a movie or two (I have a feeling there will be a Miles easter egg in Spider-Man's next solo). And everybody's happy.

 

I never read Ultimate Spider-Man, so what makes Miles Morales a great character? There has to be more than his ethnicity I assume but I've never seen anyone ever express what that is.

For me, it's his earnestness, innocence, and almost complete lack of cynicism that I enjoy. He's just a young kid, in way over his head in many situations, doing the best he can in a confusing world where the people he trusts (certain family members, even) don't always have his best interests at heart.

And it's just well written all around. Bendis is great at individual characters and their moments. The art has never been anything but top notch as well.

 

That was pretty good, you should do the back cover write-ups for novels.

I've always been reluctant when hearing people suggest it but I have seen the Peter Parker origin one too many times if they are going to keep going back to that well.

But yeah, I think having Miles gave us the best of all worlds. I was still reading Spider-Man in his current adventures, and I also had the "what if someone took over for Spider-Man after he died" premise of the Ultimate comics. It was different enough to make it worth it, I think, but still true to Spider-Man, you know?

Killing Peter would be pretty silly in the MCU - the casual moviegoer is by now wedded to the Parker character, whereas a comic reader will have seen multiple versions and resurrections of some characters.

That's not to say Miles won't get a shot, but it'll need to be several movies down the line, maybe if Peter retires.

 

Or there can be two concurrent and teaming up.

It sounds like they'll be doing "Ultimate Spider-man" the disney cartoon. Coulson's even in that one.

I think that's actually Marvel's plan for upcoming reboot/whatever of the comic universe after Secret War. Miles is going to be on the new Avenger's team. Some of the released covers hint that Peter and Mary Jane are going to be married again with a young daughter as well.

Plus Peter and Miles made a great team in Spider-Men.

If they're going to do teen Spidey, that might actually work. Get a great comedic writer on the script for some of the dialogue. Some of the best parts of the first Amazing Spider-Man movie was him being funny while fighting crime. Like the scene where he stops the carjacker, that was the Spider-Man I remember reading. A whole movie of that could work. I trust Marvel Studios to handle him, they know he's probably the most popular hero they own.

I'd love for them to actually introduce him in a post-credits scene for Avengers: AoU. The camera pans to show Queens. Spider-Man swings to one of the houses and sees someone inside. Then Coulson sticks his head out the window, "Do you mind coming in Mr. Parker? We have a lot to talk about."

 

i doubt it will ever happen, but i'd like Marvel to do something really unexpected with Spidey...like a Spider-Man 2099 movie.

I can totally see his point. Looking at all the heroes in the MCU, most are in that 30-something age bracket at the moment.

It would require a complete shift in Miles motivations in doing what he does. With Peter, it's all about power, responsibility and Uncle Ben. With Miles, it's about living up to the name and legacy of the deceased Peter Parker and being worthy to carry forward with the "Spider-Man" name.
