Where will Star Trek 3 Rank in 2016 Blockbuster Films

I dunno, Ghostbusters could be very big - if it's good.

Yeah but it's not going to be $1.2billion Iron Man 3 and probably not $788 million Fast and Furious 6 good though is it? That was what STID was up against among others in 2013. I can't see any two of ST3's competition making those numbers.

To add, it's also that Iron Man 3 and FF6 were very much outliers when we take all the other big ginormous special effects movies of the year altogether. It'd be nice if ST3 (or Ghostbusters, for that matter) make those numbers, but even if it doesn't, they can still be financial successes without being at the top.

Not basing this on anything other than the good things I've heard so far, I'm confident that ST3 will be in the top 3 and no lower than that. I'm definitely of the opinion that being without J.J. Abrams has put this project in a position to have to prove itself and, in that sense, it's like getting to do the first one, all over again. And we know how successful that was ...

I think these are both very optimistic views. I just cannot see ST3 doing any more than 600-650 at the absolute maximum, despite how much I'd love it to.

It's total speculation I know, but it's fun to do.

If I was going to guess - I'd say about 6-7th in the top grossing movies of the summer and probably top 10 of the year.

To clarify, I don't expect ST3 to be in the top 3 (though I'll be more than ecstatic if 2takesfrakes proves me wrong!), but I still expect the movie to make Paramount a huge amount of profit anyway.

Hell, being Top 10 worldwide is still good. Top 15 worldwide would be a little disappointing for Trek but still good when it comes to the land of overall high profile Hollywood movies -- I was surprised to find out that TMNT was "only" in the Top 15, but from the press and Michael Bay, you'd think it was gangbusters. It was certainly enough to get a sequel greenlit.

Since we're speculating wildly, I predict they will introduce a Jar Jar Binks character in ST3, and total US takings will be $127.98.

Looking at the release schedule for 2016 its not that bad. The real big dogs - CA3, BvS, XM:A, SuicideSquad, Rogue1, ID2 (Transformers5 is 2017) are no where near Treks July date and those surrounding it shouldn't be much of a threat (BFG? Tarzan? female Ghostbusters? King Arthur remake?)

yes. actually this is the first time for the JJ films Trek hasn't been surrounded by so many seemingly sure fire hits in the same month.

ST09 was up against Wolverine (which was XMen 4 at the time), Angels/Demons (Da Vinci Code 2), and Terminator 4 (starring a post Dark Knight Bale). but Trek managed to blow them all away domestically, and overall ww only lost out to A&D. STID had to compete with IM3, F&F6, HO3, & Gatsby and did well beating HO and Gatsby domestic and ww

ST3 has those already mentioned as well as Power Rangers, Ice Age 5 and Bourne 5 but I don't think any of those will be as problematic for Trek as the ones ST09&STID had

Depends how many explosions and pairs of boobs there are in the trailer

and the sole reason why I don't like the marvel studio films. its all about explosions and captain America's ass or scarlet Johanson ass.

The Alice eve's underwear scene was cringe worthy enough to last a lifetime.

In the top 10 with a half a billion dollars, give or take, worldwide. Somewhere around 100 bucks will have come from me as I hope to take my spouse and a bunch of our kids / grandchild to it as well.
