Teheran outduels Alvarez and Grilli gets his first of 47 saves. ;)

Not sure. Unfortunately I was at work during the game and didn't get to see the highlight reel yet.

And just announced 4/82.5 extension for Porcello, not too shabby a day.

$20 million a year for Porcello, who pitched above league-average for the first time since 2009 last season, is ludicrous. He's basically an innings eater that you stash at the back of the rotation, and he's getting paid 4/5 of what Jon Lester makes. Nothing about that makes sense -- for God's sake, Ervin Santana basically hit free agency with Porcello's career to date, got hit with the QO, and watched his market collapse.

Id say he's more then a 4/5, he's atleast a 3. They obviously feel that they would rather pay him, and yes its an overpay, coming into his prime years rather then overpay for an older pitcher. They also must feel that he is trending to be higher then a number 3.
(stolen from reddit)

xFIP rankings over the past 3 seasons, min 500 IP:
19. Jordan Zimmermann
20. James Shields
21. Doug Fister
22. Rick Porcello
23. Jon Lester
24. Hiroki Kuroda
25. Homer Bailey

I mean he's right in that group. No he isn't a Lester or Zimmerman. But I'd compare him to Shields atleast. Yes he's a groundball guy, yes he doesn't strike many out, but don't forget he's been pitching in front of Detroit's shoddy infield defense the last few years, successfully as well. Boston's infield is much, much better.

At this point Timby I can't think of a deal you've LIKED over the last few years. I mean hell they are all overpays, and with a team like the Red Sox, I'd rather them overpay in dollars rather then years, which is exactly what they have been doing.

Re: 2015 MLB Season - Can the Cubs FINALLY win the World Series? (No.)

The Marlins had a rain delay in a stadium with a roof because their weather system is the CEO checking a weather app on his phone.

They also have no tarps...because Marlins.

I was really confused by that. Thank you for clarifying. Someone on another board said that they have a schedule in which the roof can be open and closed and my reply was shouldn't the weather dictate the schedule? If you're going to have a stadium with a retractable roof, than use the retractable roof.

The Giants won and Bumgarner looked great. Now the real questions begin, like can this pitching staff be suitable. I was talking to some folks in the baseball forum today about the Rockies being a surprise and the common response I got was the Rockies pitching was pretty much garbage. Well, if the Giants pitching on paper is what we might get on the field, I have to say that the Giants pitching can't be that much worse, especially if Cain is hurt again.

"overpay" is the new "pay".

Tough to figure this one as good or bad yet. The idea, in general, is to not pay older pitchers as FA anymore, as those are loser contracts. So counting this year, they're essentially paying 5/95 as a contract. A little high, but you're paying for age 26-30 seasons, at 19M per. High if you want to compare against a couple years ago, but not bad if you compare to CURRENT FA deals. Aces are getting 25-30M, so sub-20 isn't bad anymore; that gets you a #2 or #3 pitcher now. So good for age, and he's trending well, so it's the kind of risk I'd prefer they take instead of paying for ages 31-37 for Lester or Scherzer.

Maybe it won't work out, but have to figure they've liked what they've seen, checked the medicals, and based on age, it's a good gamble.

They've also gotta be looking at their pitching roster, and because of the couple risks in there, it's good to have at least one stable guy locked in for a couple years. If Clay is shaky again, he's on an option year (but for 13M, so probably still a lock to be picked up). Miley and Kelly we'll see, and Masterson is short term. Got some kids hopefully coming up, so they're locking Porcello to be the stable veteran to anchor things for the next couple years. Tough to hate that. And if Porcello takes the next step and becomes closer to that Ace pitcher, the deal becomes a steal. If he stays a #2 or #3, it's fair. If he falls off again, a mistake. But can't pan it upfront given how salaries are shooting through the roof.

Re: 2015 MLB Season - Can the Cubs FINALLY win the World Series? (No.)

^Cain's status is up in the air, and Peavy has been scratched from tonight's start because of back stiffness (replaced by Vogelsong). It's fortunate that the Giants have a relatively deep pitching staff; otherwise, they'd be up a creek.

Sonny Gray flirted with a no-hitter, and the A's came out swinging.

Why do so many teams have the day off today? Opening Day was just yesterday.

The Rangers needed the day off to fire their batting coach, and the Phillies needed the day off to get over their post shellacking hangovers.

The Rockies opening day starter was Kyle Kendrick. You'll be fine.

I always assumed that it was because if the opening day weather was bad, they could just move it to the next day. However if a team plays in a dome that shouldn't be a problem... unless you're the Marlins.

Re: 2015 MLB Season - Can the Cubs FINALLY win the World Series? (No.)

^That's the reason. Teams that have games today are playing in cities with domed or roofed stadiums.

^ Except for Oakland and L.A., but they don't get many rain delays down there, IIRC.

Re: 2015 MLB Season - Can the Cubs FINALLY win the World Series? (No.)

The Giants' 2015 injury woes continue, as Brandon Belt pulled up lame chasing a foul pop-up and was removed from the game.

Whoosh.

But its for his ages 26-30 seasons...not 31 on. And its for 4 years, not six. It's about the years and the ages that these guys are, as well as what their performance is. They would rather be paying for what they THINK is going to be improved future performance from Porcello, then pay for what essentially is past performance from Lester as he gets older and moves out of his prime. Do you really think that they wouldn't have backed up the money truck if Lester had the accomplishments he had, and was ONLY 26 during this offseason? Of course they would have, any team would. Even this offseason, if they could have signed lester to a 4/100 deal they would have. It was about his age and years, not about the dollar value attached to that.

You can disagree with how they evaluate Porcello, or what kind of pitcher is is going to be, but their reasoning and plan here is pretty damn easy to see. They are willing to spend money into the age 30 years for position players, but when it comes to pitching they are preferring to lock guys who are younger, and are trending well as they enter their prime. Is there risk in that? Of course there is, but so is giving $155 million and 6 years to Jon Lester.
