Pegg updates on script

I was wondering about that too

anyway I really have a bad feeling about this. It seems like they are doing a reboot of the reboot, so to speak, and starting from the beginning. It's so easy for a new creative team in a situation like this to essentially ditch everything that was done before.
It seems also that they are a mess right now with them having to follow what the new director wants, what the studio wants, and the fact they are pushed to write the script asap...and the feeling I get is that they want to start over and forget about the last movie or at the very least, they won't take into consideration what Orci&co did.

Not gonna lie, as a fan of these movies I don't feel super optimistic right now :(

There's nothing in the interview to hang that on.

Of course every time directors and writers change on a film series the nuances of the films change. I'm sure we won't see the massive discontinuity that we saw between ST:TMP and ST:TWOK. ;)

That's not what I'm getting out of this. There's nothing to suggest a complete 'do over'. I like the new movies as well and am cautiously optimistic that we're going to get something fun and interesting.

It sounds to me like Pegg wants to build on the previous movies but move in a more positive and fun direction. Could we be seeing the start of their 5 year mission?

Simon Pegg said more about Star Trek 3. He was very clarifying.
denofgeek

"It's completely new. I haven't read Bob (Orci)'s script and they didn't want us to. So we went back to the drawing board"

"We had creative meetings with Justin and there were things he wanted in there".

"Justin's got an amazing visual mind. He's great at that kind of choreography"

"It's very easy these days, in the kind of post-modern era, to get bogged down in self referentiality or thinking, "Oh let's put Harry Mudd in".

"I feel (STID) like the thing that for me was kind of jolting was that it kind of wanted to embrace itself a little too much, rather than take off and do what Star Trek did"

"Star Trek was very, very optimistic -- it was all about forward motion and the human condition. I feel like that's what it needs to be".

Perfect!

That's very encouraging!

I can't wait to see Spock leap a hundred feet across a chasm from one shuttlecraft to another to catch a falling Uhura. ;)

I'm looking forward to Kirk flying a shuttlecraft through a perilous asteroid field while not breaking eye contact with Carol.

my turn:
I want see a scene of the 7 enjoying a BBQ whilst Kirk prattles on about being 'a family '

like Amanda?

i hope they dont repeat anything from the old film. the remake of wrath of khan in STID was bad enough

Shouldn't a writer, especially one of a multi-million dollar project, be one who does writing for a living? Pegg doesn't make his living solely as a writer so could that be playing a part in why we don't have a finished script yet?

Why would it? Pegg's a writer, and that's enough. Whether it's his sole source of income should be irrelevant.

Being *just* a writer (as if there was such a thing) shouldn't be the only litmus test. There are plenty of people in Hollywood who do nothing but write, and turn out crappy screenplays. If he can write well, it really doesn't matter what else he does for a living, if he's committed to and devoting a huge chunk of his time and energy into writing. And one advantage he has is that he knows what it's like to be on both sides of the screen; a screenwriter has to take that into account as well.

Keep in mind that Matt Damon and Ben Affleck won Oscars -- for writing. Steve Martin, Mindy Kaling, and Tina Fey are also actors/writers that have gone on to critical acclaim (and the annual compiled budget for a major network TV show can rival that of a big screen feature).

As well, there are some schools out there that believe in the idea that, if you want to become a good writer, take a good acting or improv course. All that energy and insight is a good way to contribute ideas to the body of your story. It's not the only way to write, but it can be helpful.

.... insta-thought when I read:
"Justin's got an amazing visual mind. He's great at that kind of choreography"

(and people thought that Spock's jump in Into Darkness was not human :guffaw: )

Translation: Justin has a bunch of action scenes he wants to do and asked us to write a movie around them.
