Your Dream?

I am talking about when you ended "high school" and were going off to wherever. Are you living your dream?

I had 3 dreams, one "realistic" and others not so much one religious based. 1. Teacher(HS art or kindergarten). 2. Rockstar! 3. Missionary.

None ever happened.

Rockstar! Didn't require college but because the others felt like I couldn't do it. Other for financial reasons don't know why I gave up on going to college.

I'm over 60 and still living, which is something I'd never dreamed of happening, so that's good enough for me.

Someone told me I'd be dead before 25 and I now 37 so I guess I am doing good.

End of high school? I wanted to be the first woman governor of the state I lived in then. Nope, didn't make it. But I've had a mostly satisfying career. The other dream -- or at least assumption -- was that I would get married and live happily ever after, which I did, until I didn't.

I was not the most ambitious kid in high school. My dream was just to find a college and do reasonably well in it, then find a job. Guess I did OK.

You don't need college to find or get to a good job. I guess that is subjective. One could work from HS to a higher position. It depends on the field.

ETA: I should say some places within the past 20-30 years you can start at the bottom and move up, get college education along the way.

ADD: My apologies @Mr. Laser Beam You just said find a job. I was thinking "good" job. To me it is part money & enjoy-ability.

Yes, that is true. It also depends on where you live. For example, I live in a town that has a heavy mining industry, but you're going to need at least a college/university minimum for that. It's also an industry that is unionized. The average job is going to be a bit harder to come by.

On the flip side, it also means that there have been more people successfully opening their own unique businesses. We just visited and toured the only winery in our region, which is a rather large region at that. Despite the owner's struggles with overcoming adversity, in a region that is hard to grow in, he's living his dream, and his father's dream, and despite the fact that he's not officially recognized all because he's not in the prime designated winery region. One can't help but root for the guy. He's only in his early 40's.

As for me, I dreamed of being a radio announcer. Something in me kept pulling me at it, but I later realized I just didn't have the voice for it.

I wanted to be a writer and could have been, except for my complete and utter lack of talent.

Now, I'm a supervisor for an educational testing company. I grade other people's writing and English proficiency. There's a joke in there, somewhere.

I was a different person in that era. Back then I wanted to finish some kind of education, get married and have a family. One out of three isn't bad. I finished some kind of post secondary education.

When I graduated high school I had no ambitions unless traveling a lot, experiencing "stuff" and reading all famous works of literature is an ambition. And that's exactly what I did, funded with varying illegal and legal part time jobs. When I finally got around to maybe stopping doing that everyone else had a degree and a career and I had a long and oddly introverted series of hijinks.

I have no complaints.

I had a probably somewhat nebulous idea of going into entertainment software. Did two years of a four-year computer course at college, performed poorly, and then succeeded in getting a civil service job. I'm still with the civil service after 24 years.

Ten years before that, probably a dream of being a rocket scientist.

My dream was to get a house in the country with a few acres of woodland to roam in and spend my time writing. I'm still working on that, but things turned out pretty well regardless. Life is what happens while you're making other plans.

I wanted to be an animator when I left school. Work for one of the big animation studios, maybe even disney. This was driven by the fact my art teacher in school really pushed me and told me how great i was. Then when i went to art school i quickly realised that I was in actual fact a piss poor drawer and looking back the only reason my teacher pushed me in school was because I was the best of a bad bunch lol!!
But I do kinda do something similar now just not as a job, I also wanted to be a writer but this is more of a modern thing rather than when I left school and is something I am working on in my spare time.
So my dreams are now more hobbies than anything else. The job i do which is an Employment and Skills Officer, helping people find work and training (which I have done for 14 years) was not something I planned on and sorta fell into. But I do enjoy it so thats a bonus!

My dream was to go to college, become a meteorologist, and have a family of my own. At 35, I am currently as far from my dream as one can be without being dead.

Not to say you couldn't do the other things, just that a job and family are more readily in people's grasp. As someone said upthread, a lot of dreams end up as hobbies. And that's okay too.

It's certainly a possibility, though I do admit I am feeling a great deal of pressure (and significant panic) at this point.

That's a fair point. Though age issues still happen to men, we're theoretically capable into our later years. Then again, having a child in one's late 40s, early 50s and beyond still presents its own issues.

I got my DreamWish for a while, but people in a relationship change. One good part of the dream, I have kids that grew up into good grownups, and I remember asking the Parent Gods for that. And, like Melakon, I am almost 58 and never dreamed I would live this long...so there's that on top of it!
