I'm surprised to see TNG fare so poorly. In previous similar polls I remember TNG and DS9 doing about equally well.

Others have mentioned DS9 picking up popularity in syndication or from DVD. That probably has something to do with it.

I think a lot of that also comes down to the fact that DS9's serialized format and (sometimes) darker, morally ambiguous themes are more in line with today's common programming. Not that TNG isn't a great show (at the time, it was certainly more popular than DS9)...but I think that current audiences are more likely to view DS9 as being superior.

Also, I think DS9 was hurt at the time it came out because it was so contrarian. Now that it's 2015 and not 1993, I think it's a lot easier for fans to accept a different kind of Star Trek

DS9 has been my favorite Trek series ever since the war with the Dominion. It was definitely dark and felt like there was no way they could win long term. That was some fantastic writing.

I've met people that said that both VOY and ENT surpass TOS AND TNG.

Nothing surprises me anymore...

Different people have different taste. Plus, part of it may be simply what they grew up with. I have no idea how I would feel about Star Trek if I got into it twenty years later than I did or was born in the early-90's instead of the early-70's.

I immersed myself in Trek in the 70's/80's. But part of that was the fact that there weren't a whole lot of quality options on the TV sci-fi front.

You weren't part of those that saw it when it aired the first time.

1. Voyager- love the characters and the interaction between them. And it has the best looking first officer.;)

2. TNG- it has interesting storylines, but for me the characters are too wooden (except Data)

I really don`t like the TOS series, it`s too old for my taste.
I also don`t like DS9. I can`t love the characters and for me the series is too dark.
I haven`t watched Enterprise yet.

It looks like Voyager is your Goldilocks' choice. You know " This one is too old, this one is too dark..."

Not that there is anything wrong with that.

But it was my first exposure to Trek and TNG was still more than a decade away when I started watching (1975). So TOS, was ingrained in me at a young age and long before any of the spinoffs came along.

Though I was watching TNG the other day and asked my seven-year old if he wanted to watch with me. His response: "I don't like the Generation. Just Kirk and Spock".

I voted TNG, because season 3 and 4 made me fall in love with Star Trek.

However, DS9 and Voyager have aged a lot better. On average, the episodes are somehow more entertaining than TNG to me now.
Enterprise can be enjoyable, but it has a lot of crappy B-movie eps. Season 3 was incredible though.
TOS is a guilty pleasure. When it's good, it's good. On the other hand, it has a lot of episodes that make me think: "Yep, it's a 60's TV show alright"
TNG S1 may not be good, but it looks and feels like old Star Trek. I can't help but like it.

Over the years, my tastes change, but right now my list is:

1. TNG Seasons 2-5 / VOY Seasons 4-7
2. DS9 Seasons 1-5
3. TOS / TNG Season 1
4. Enterprise Season 1-3
5. TNG Season 6-7 / VOY Season 1-3
6. DS9 Seasons 6-7
7. Enterprise Season 4
8. TAS

- As you can see, I prefer the traditional standalone Star Trek episodes.
- In S6-7 DS9 focused too much on the Dominion War and forgot all about the Gamma Quadrant.
- Enterprise Season 4 was weird. The TOSification was a good idea, but I didn't like how they 'ended' the TCW, the 3-parters were too long and the finale was horrible.
- Late-TNG and early-VOY are incredibly mediocre. And I hated the Kazons, Maquis and Indian stuff.
- TAS? The occasional good story doesn't make up for the bad animation and bad voice-overs.

True age, location etc.. can all influence our tastes. Do I find ENT and VOY to be the weaker entries yes, were they bad shows no, it's just I feel than shows like DSN had a higher consistancy of quality. But others might feel differently.

And as you mention there was a lot less choice X years ago. I remember the days of three channel TV in the UK.

Those were simpler times.;)

Even we ENT fans admit the show was incredibly inconsistent. But a few episodes (Breaking the ice, Shuttlepod One, Cease Fire, Twilight) are as good as anything in Star Trek.

Someday I want to do a proper watch-through of VOY, but unless it's on TV or available super-cheap, I'm not sure how that's going to happen :(

Every Star Trek show was inconsistent. Two weeks before "The Best of Both Worlds", TNG gave us "Menage a Troi". The same season DS9 produced "In the Pale Moonlight", it forced "Profit and Lace" upon an unsuspecting world. Between "Mirror, Mirror" and "The Doomsday Machine", TOS made us suffer through "The Apple". Being a Trek fan at all means putting up with a lot of dreck.

It's always been TNG for me.

It's seems like you have a knack for creating threads that already exist fonzob1.

Stop whining and produce a link. The other threads you linked to had polls with far too many obscure characters. These polls cut it down to the main recurring characters.
