MLB Offseason 2014-15: Wait, pitchers and catchers report WHEN?

I always thought they should reduce the number of games (by even more than 8).

The expanded playoffs has them going pretty late in the year.

I was thinking less than 150.

Good luck trying to convince the Red Sox of that. I think they've sold out every game since 1752.

Eh, it was a little faked at the end. 2012 and Bobby V finally killed that one for us. Believe it officially ended the second game of 2013. (people had already sold out 2012 before Bobby killed the team) Once people couldn't GIVE tickets away, the smaller scalpers stopped buying as many. Many games still sell out, but no artificial pressure on a tuesday night in April against the Jays, those can be bought. Once the idea of a sell-out ended, the market relaxed quite a bit.

This makes sense in a practical way but I like baseball though and I am pretty happy with it as it is.

Because eliminating an extra week and a half of baseball will make attendance skyrocket and bring us back to the halcyon days of yore. Christ, Manfred is a tool.

Don't get the benefit he sees in it, although i'm personally all for it. Too many games, tough to care about any one in particular. But can't really cut enough out for that to really change things. Agree that they can't add anything to the playoffs without cutting what they do in the regular season, though. It already goes too long, going into November (or starting mid-march) just doesn't work. It's already kinda dumb for a summer sport to play their most important games in 40 degree (or less) weather with threat of snow. Championship doesn't reflect the conditions for majority of the season.

Could argue football plays finale indoors or in nice weather usually (liked mixing in outdoors games, though, although terrible for the event that is the superbowl), but greater mix of indoor games, or teams that play in nice weather. Plus, it spans August to January, so you get pretty much all weather anyway.

Playing baseball outdoors in Boston in late October (sometimes into November) is kinda nuts when they are playing a summer sport, and can't control the conditions.

The thing is, the players union is against it, and I don't understand how Manfred thinks he can get owners to consent to losing X number of games' worth of ticket sales, concessions, TV income, etc.

The Yankees are criticizing A-Rod for showing up early to spring training. They're really grasping at straws there.

So instead of there being a crazy media circus tomorrow, Rodriguez arrives early, dodges the media frenzy and doesn't create a huge shitstorm for the Yankees, and he's the bad guy.

Jesus. The poor Yankees.

They should just DFA him and be done with it.

If the old man was still alive they'd have already done it or dug up enough dirt to blackmail him.

(or had him killed)

Agreed. I don't like A-Rod, but I don't see why his showing up to Spring Training early is a problem. This must be the Yankees' way of telling Rodriguez they don't want him; why don't they work out some sort of buyout so that he can get his money (since that's he cares about anyway), and they can move on?

They're suddenly money-conscious.

This, and the lack of getting Moncada even when they had a HUGE need seems to indicate that.

As long as A-Rod can hit, and perhaps also run / field, I really could give a shit what he's done. At least he's put some *excitement* into Yankees' training camp, which has been rather lacking as of late. #FORG1V3

As for Moncada: Yeah, I'd have liked for the Yanks to get him too, but what's done is done. Not gonna panic. There's others out there.

Mainly DH. Chase Headley is the regular 3B.

Between Headley and Didi, the Yankees will actually have a solid infield defense for the first time in like a decade and a half.

I still think Didi can hit, also. His bat isn't far away from being good.

LA Times reporting that Josh Hamilton is meeting with MLB officials about a disciplinary issue and the Angels are preparing for "penalties."

Josh, what are you doing.

Edit: Ken Rosenthal said he has spoken to an MLB exec and asked if Hamilton was going down for PEDs; the response was, "Worse." Please don't be back on the heroin, Josh.

Sounds like it's cocaine.

Sad, wonder if the Angels pay for a guardian like the Reds and Rangers did.

I've always wondered why more MLB teams don't do this.

Star players can make 20 million. Pay some shmoe 150k to be their traveling companion and basically tell them not to do dumb things.
