Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

The DVD releases toned down the awful matte lines but didn't get rid of them. They're still noticeable but not as obnoxiously bad as they were beforehand. The Blu ray is probably the best version we're going to get of the Rancor sequence, at least when it comes to correcting the original effects flaws and limitations, but once you've eliminated the matte lines the whole thing looks a hundred times better and you can pay attention to the parts of the sequence you're meant to.

Part of the charm of the original trilogy is that the lightsaber battles are silent, musically, except for ROTJ but even in that the music was kind of subdued until Luke's charge at Vader. There's actually some music on the soundtracks intended for the carbon chamber fight that was cut (including a triumphant statement of Yoda's theme when Luke gets the upper hand over Vader and knocks him over the chamber), but I think it works better as seen in the film.

But everything since then has had to have "epic" music it seems.

Speaking of Rancors,I wonder if we'll get a 'monster' scene in the new film.

Meaning, in most of the films the characters are in peril by a large alien monster. In ANH it's the Dianoga/Trash compactor creature; In ESB it's the Wampa (Which originally had a larger role in the film apart from capturing and injuring Luke) and the Asteroid creature; in ROTJ it's the Rancor and Sarlacc, TPM has the trio of underwater creatures, AOTC has the arena monsters....ROTS was originally going to feature a monster Obi-Wan ran into while hiding from the Clones....etc.

It'd be cool if it's a practical effect too.

Considering that JJ put a giant monster into a Star Trek movie, I have no doubt he'll find room somewhere in the new SW for one.

There are giant lava fleas on Mustafar that the natives ride and they're briefly seen in the film so I guess those count as massive, creepy beasts even though Obi-Wan or Anakin are never attacked by them. There's also the Boga pack lizard that Obi-Wan tames and rides when he's chasing Grievous through the bowels of the Separatist facility on Utapau so that counts as a big beast, just a friendly one.

Don't forget Greedo's incompetent aim from a distance of barely two feet. Truly monstrous.

When he was a kid on Tatooine he got his ass kicked by Jake Lloyd. He was always just a little bit off.

Saw that, but I'm treating it with an enormous grain of salt the size of a small moon (or a space station). If it winds up being true then it'll be quite the controversy in the fandom for years to come. If not then this was just another enthusiastic rumor pretending to be an early spoiler that whipped up more interest and excitement about the film, which might be part of the motivation behind these iffy, so-called "leaks" to begin with.

True.

Like most fans, I'd be mightily pissed off if he was brought back just to be killed off.

Regardless of how well it was done, I don't want Ep. VII to be a downer. Kill him off in a movie or two's time ? O.K., but please, not now...

I know he's not the biggest nor most enthusiastic fan of his own character, but if he's smart he'll wait a little bit longer if it even happens at all. With the money Disney can now pay these actors walking away from the role like that wouldn't make him many new fans.

I know this rumor has been making the rounds pretty much since production started, so I'm not putting a lot of stock in it.

Yea, I think it's been conjectured, since even before it was actually a rumor, all the way to the initial casting news.

Plus, I sincerely doubt that JJ Abrams and Disney would tolerate a spoiler that gigantic being released 10 months before the movie. As tightlipped and secretive as JJ normally is about his film projects the chances that this is accurate are pretty slim.

Meh, JJ sure bungled the Khan spoiler for STID. Most people knew almost immediately that was the plan.

Regarding spoilers - one thing I've never really understood is why people who really want to be surprised - I mean big time surprised - by any film read threads like this about the film? They have to know that only will there be general discussion but also spoilers and conjecture about a film.

Spoilers don't bother me about films - albeit I would have been pissed to have learned Willis was already dead in the Sixth Sense - but generally the spoiler doesn't "spoil," the film for me. If they really bother some people, - don't read threads about the upcoming film you don't want to be spoiled about.

There's a major difference between knowing who is going to play a character and knowing a character is going to die or knowing that Darth Vader is the Father. Or knowing that River Song is going to be in an episode of Doctor Who or knowing an episode will deal with her origin versus knowing what that twist origin is. Some people want to know the first time, but, not the second type
