MLB Offseason 2014-15: Wait, pitchers and catchers report WHEN?

Yankees are also retiring Bernie Williams and Jorge Posada's numbers. They, Pettitte and Willie Randolph are all getting Monument Park plaques

There's nothing like reminding your fans how good the team was to remind them how good your current team is not.

^ That's rich, coming from a Cubs fan.

This may shock you, but it is possible to look at things from an objective perspective as opposed to that of a rabid fan of City Name Sports Team.

But really, my larger point with my original post is that retiring Pettitte’s number at the same time you’re turning Rodriguez into history’s greatest monster raises a whole host of questions. I mean, I get that Pettitte is the "steroid era"’s second greatest whitewash after Ortiz, but at least wait until your current PED scandal has passed for heaven's sake, otherwise you look like a bunch of damn hypocrites.

A-Rod is a jerk. Pettitte is suitably contrite. At this point, I'm prepared to call it even.

All PED players are terrible and the worst except for the ones who have 15 years of giving the media good quotes and being friendly. Those guys are cool. Got it.

I mean, that's a position as absurd as the blackballing of Bonds just because he was surly and a jerk to writers.

Oh God. You had to mention Ortiz didn't you. You know what you have just done? Fueling the beantown persecution complex man.

Well, enforcing the rulebook strikezone [...] would be helpful, I'd say.

Except that's the opposite of what they're doing. The rulebook strike zone is being more accurately called so they want to change the strikezone to take away the low strike the rules currently allow for.

Oh, I think plenty of below-knee strikes are getting called. There's a few articles with pitchf/x data.

Yay for attempting to bait a couple of us here. Would you prefer us to ignore it so you get the free shot, or respond so that you can point to it and say you told us so? Pretty lame either way, so moving on.

As for the actual comment, will just say that Ortiz only showed up in the list (that was supposed to not be released, and we never got the full list of names for, or what they tested for) in 2003. Hasn't been on any others that I'm aware of, and his post-2003 numbers look pretty decent...

A-ROID didn't need any help from the Yankees. It was only the 2nd time that they started to seek financial avenues.

It is interesting concerning Andy. If I remember correctly, wasn't he in Texas when this came about?

It's really funny that Chuck "I can't make the throw to 1st base" Knoblock has chimed up on twitter. He has sinned, so I guess he can cast the first stone.

Nice try, but part of the admission was that he specifically used it in 2002 'to recover from injury'. Yankees are being very random about which stones go in their outfield rock garden, and which get tossed at people, but all being grabbed from the same tainted pile. Public apology demanded of ARod, retired number and ceremony for Pettitte, same 'crime'

Same crime? Hardly. Many used to recover. Who's to say Andy wasn't.

Much different situation from A-ROID.

I don't remember Andy bribing, threatening to sue the MLB etc...

So Pettite gets a pass because you like him. That's some sound logic and not hypocritical at all.

In other news, your first look at Boston's $95 million acquisition:

^I like Sandoval, but I'm glad the Giants didn't try to match Boston's offer. Any player who's in danger of weighing more than he hits isn't worth the money Pablo's getting.

As I said a few months ago after he signed:

Likely to be immobile within three years, has almost zero range, can't hit lefties, has regressed in almost every meaningful statistic each year since 2011 (BA, OBP, SLG, OPS+), and it's not like he can fill Ortiz's role of "fat guy playing DH who hits dingers" because Sandoval is in no way a power hitter. Any way you slice it, $95 million for a guy who is going to wind up averaging about a .700 OPS is a ludicrous overpay.

That's going to be an albatross of a contract a year or two from now. Dude looks pregnant.

Will certainly be interesting. Initial reports also said he was moving really well, so maybe like Vince Willfork, he's just one of those athletic fat guys? Guess we'll see what happens, can always look to start sliding him towards 1B or DH if mobility becomes an issue as the contract goes on. Replacing Middlebrooks' corpse at 3B, so gotta look better than that. Was hoping he'd show up in a little better shape, but will see how it pans out.

I like the panda.... he can play, and can also play in the post season.

Where did I say Andy "gets a pass"?
