San Francisco Air Quality

I have a feeling this was intended as an underhanded slap at the Abrams films. All that "smog" in the 23rd century when Roddenberry said Earth was a paradise.

If that's truly the case, then this topic has my vote for Silliest Nitpick of a NuTrek Film.

Nah. We had one person criticize the film because Spock runs. They said Spock doesn't run.

Though this one would be close.

It is not so much the fact Spock was running, but rather the way he was running. Spock has a he always ran in TOS which had something to do with how he perceived someone who grew up on a world with no moon would run. Unfortunately, Quinto didn't run in this manner at all, emulating instead the manner someone would run on a world with two suns and five moons. In his defense, none of the other actors to play Vulcans in Pure Trek ever bothered to try running Nimoy style, but at least they ran like someone from Earth, unimaginative as that is in the greater scheme of things

London is the town that's not actually very foggy. Its reputation for "pea soup" was a result of pollution from the burning of so much coal in the city combined with climatic conditions in the area that didn't allow the smog to be carried away by wind. If London had been foggy in STID, it would've ruined the movie for me.

As is, a foggy SF in ST09 was appropriate, and it was about time in Trek. Of the times SF has been shown on a Trek TV episode or in a movie, I think that's the first time it wasn't shown with crystal clear blue skies. Previously, SF has been shown too clear: that's my gripe.

Better?

:)

Here I thought we nit-picked everything in these films. I had hope. Then I remembered that this is BBS, and hope dies here.

For those who know a little something about air quality, I have a question. What is causing the phenomena that is seen in the alternate reality San Francisco? When the sky isn't blue, it takes on a strange color.

I am talking about a shot like this.

The air quality in San Francisco is phenomal now. It should be even more so in the positive future of Star Trek. Instead, we have this haze.

Fog in San Francisco still exists in the 23rd century, even in the prime universe.

I was just at the Golden Gate Bridge the other day, so I took these pix:

How foggy is it, and when?

Typical overcast.

Heck I recall a shot in Star Trek IV that wasn't an FX shot were Kirk & Spock were walking near the Golden gate bridge....

Yes Virgina, there is FOG in San Francisco ;-)

Hmmmph! Those of us in Virginia already know that, thank you. :p

Also, take it from me, be very, very careful how you spell our commonwealth's name. ;)

I have lived in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1983. I am familiar with fog, and I don't remember it as being that shade of color in ST and ST:ID. It was grayish-white.

Thanks for your comments.

Some have said that the color of fog is like what is seen in the films. I haven't seen that color of fog in my experience. I was reporting on the color of the fog I have seen.

Fog is mist suspended in the air, so it's just water, ergo basically it's cloud color, i.e. white. It looks grayish only because it diffuses the sunlight.

It looks pretty similar to me, obviously with some difference accounting for time of day, background colors, thickness of the fog, etc.
