Scotty's Weight

Captain Clark Terrell

Commodore
Commodore
Given that military service requires maintaining a certain level of fitness, why wasn't Scotty's weight more of an issue in-universe? I've a hard time imagining that he'd have been allowed to serve on a starship without meeting certain weight requirements.

Geez, Doohan's been dead 10 years, can't people leave him alone? ;)

Maybe the weight gain was due to whatever that "wee bout" was that he had. Maybe it wasn't really weight, but some sort of radiation exposure that only made him look heavy, like a Macy's Thanksgiving balloon.

maybe he had enough seniority to be able to keep getting waivers for not meeting requirements.

As I recall, Scotty got progressively heavier from II onward, but by this point, he was "captain of engineering" so he was probably considered more professorial and focused on engineering.

Despite years of rewatching TWOK, it didn't occur to me until this year that Scotty probably had the conn when Kirk beams up from the Genesis cave, when Scotty said, "Don't give me too many bumps." But even then, it was probably the exception since he was in his engineering uniform. Other than that, we never saw him beam down or take the conn again.

He beamed down with the rest of them in ST6. He even got to be Action Man, kicking open a door and taking out the would-be assassin.

^ And the same goes for dealing with the assassin. Nobody is gonna survive ten metric tons of Scotty coming down on them. ;)

For the same reason that Kirk was able to freeclimb partway up El Capitan - artificial gravity technology has been miniaturised to the extent that the heavier gentleman can now wear a belt that reduces his effective mass to any desired amount. I'm sure a few of us wish we had that tech available now...

A Captain is a very senior rank. Only flag officers could give Scotty crap and they hopefully have better things to do.

Doohan I think looked OK in TPM and TWOK-it's Search For Spock I think when the weight gain starts to become more notable-especially since (in universe) it's supposed to take place not that long after TWOK.

People like Scotty caused synthehol to be produced and health restrictions to be added to replicators. :p

I can remember people in the row in front of me giggling and commenting on how rediculously big Scotty had gotten when I saw TVH first-run.
I feel bad commenting on Doohan's weight but when your only acting work has been reduced to a few weeks of filming every two years, you should probably try to make an effort.
