Ghostbusters 2016: Talk about the movie(s).

Disclaimer: I didn't see Ghostbusters until later in life so I have no particular nostalgia or emotional attachment to it.

I think an all female cast is a good idea. Even today in Hollywood, if there's a female in an ensemble cast she's usually treated like a token or a romantic interest.

I don't know about these particular women. SNL stock was not the right pool to draw from here. Yes, the original had Dan Ackroyd and Bill Murray. SNL does not have now what it had in the 70s, and it's taken on a very glib tone which is great for the show but not particularly great for a comedy movie about hunting ghosts.

I guess there's some law now that says every new comedy star nowadays has to either come from either SNL, The Office, Parks and Recreation, or The Daily Show. Lorne Michaels is REALLY good at taking care of his peeps.

I would love to see a Ghostbusters film with four women. Just I would have preferred four women who, you know, had to audition.

I thought Judy Gold would make for an interesting physical contrast and she's funny as well (YMMV). If they weren't looking strictly for out-and-out comediennes for the roles I think there's a lot of actresses I'd have found more interesting.

To be fair to McCarthy and Wiig they didn't have to audition perhaps but that's due to having worked with Feig before. As much as people are down on McCarthy I have more trouble with Wiig as it doesn't really seem like her kind of gig but of course that's without actually knowing the details yet.

McCarthy has suffered from typecasting, but I don't really blame her for that. She's made some iffy material work really well in the past so I'm sure she'll be a boon to the movie no matter the quality.

Re: Ghostbusters reboot: Yes, it has WOMEN

My word, women are so sexist...

And Kaley Cuoco said feminism is bad, even though her career and her character on the Big Bang Theory tend to benefit from it without her realizing it, thinking that feminism = hate all men. That must mean all women think feminism is bad and no woman suffers from discrimination or harassment, right? Because one woman said it?

Geezey creezy.

Going by the trend of this thread I would say that's about right.

What's with the laughable topic title change? "Yes, it has WOMEN"?

That title will only encourage people who hate the all female cast to come into this topic to say the cast is gimmicky or it will be another trashy chick flick. The title should just be "Ghostbusters reboot news" or something. The focus should be on movie news, and NOT a stupid debate about how it is full of women.

I agree. But a certain subset of posters in this thread have decided to make the discussion about the cast featuring those evil, slutty women. So I simply gave them what they wanted.

Made one tiny edit for you.

Bless you.

Also McCarthy is probably the best SNL host in the last three years, so her casting was probably also a function of being tied to the SNL family.

I don't mind her casting, she definitely has the range for that sort of role. Leslie Jones, a very tall 47 year old woman is an interesting choice. But Wiig and McKinnon tend to be all about facial mannerisms on their work in SNL. I don't know if they can really carry a feature length movie with that.

^^^Don't you know Trekker? In today's modern male-driven society women don't deserve two words.

Of course! Any woman who does anything to question or subvert male authority is a Nazi feminist who hates all men, and any woman who ever shows any kind of kindness or vulnerability to a male is a gender traitor sending the cause back centuries.

They are certainly NOT all separate individuals living their own lives in the manner they choose, like us guys.

If a male NBA referee makes a bad call, maybe he just had a bad view of the play or made an isolated mistake. If a female NBA referee makes a bad call, maybe she's in the wrong line of work. Just ask Chris Paul.

Re Wiig; watch Despicable Me 2 or How To Train Your Dragon 1 + 2.
She voices characters in both of them, no "facial mannerisms", still funny...

Re: Ghostbusters reboot: Yes, it has WOMEN

That's two words.

Actually, it's a compound word=the joining of two words to form a new meaning.

Since you're a grammar freak. :)
No, it's two words. Calling that a compound word is akin to calling 4 of a kind two pair.

I hate to break it to you, but "chick flick" has entered the vernacular.

Look up the meaning of compound word. You'll find it applies. In fact, here's the definition from k12reader.com to make it easy for everyone to understand:

Compound words are formed when two or more words are put together to form a new word with a new meaning.

You can write it "chickflick" if it makes you feel better.

Sorry.
