DeForest Kelley and 'Shore Leave'

How old was Emily banks in that episode? DeForest never struck me as a 'leading man' type... he was (dare I say) kind of creepy in that regard.

She's glammed up for the mannix ep. In the 70s they started representing LA as nothing but high society people who are always in evening dress as they lounge around their split-level apartments, which always had dry bars.

I thought there was genuine chemistry with Kelley and Banks. She was certainly strong enough to warrant a recurring role.

And who could blame bones? Memory alpha indicated that this role was originally intended for the Rand character but, after she was written out, they re imagined the role. My wife (and I agree) think that banks is a definite improvement.

"Shore Leave" was filmed during October 1966, so Banks was 33. Kelley was 46. The age difference really isn't that great. It might seem like it is if one's looking at it from one's teens or twenties. Or if one's her father.

That's a great photo, too. Looks like it could have been a still shot taken right on location. Nice.

I disagree. The head is WAY out of proportion with the body, giving her a far more petite figure than Emily Banks actually had, and the skin tones don't match (compare how pale the hands are with Banks' face & neck).

Look at Banks' actual figure in this shot from "Shore Leave." Unlike the DeviantArt version of Yeoman Barrows, she had shoulders:

The genuine Banks was FAR more attractive than that bad Photoshop job.

I respect your opinion, but I personally disagree with you. I believe the person who did the photoshop work did a very good job. We may nit pick on a few specific ponits of his work , but I think he captured the essence of the episode and transformed it in a contemporary way while still being true to the rough vibe of the era.

And, no, it's not my work. I have nowhere near this level of skill

FAR too modern in style, IMO. TOS was sexy, but it was still classy.

^Took another look after my intial "WOW! Right click/save!" moment. Yeah, the head is way too big.

Wasn't Kelley also a smoker then?

:)

I just read his biography a few months back and I believe he was a smoker until the mid 90s when his health really started to decline.

No kidding was he smoker, couldn't even be bothered to put out his cig during a surgical procedure on a critically ill Federation Ambassador!

Maybe it was Nimoy behind him. Or Sarek suffered a short circuit.

Kelley and Banks had great chemistry.

It's a real same we never saw Yeoman Barrows again. She blended with the main cast quite well, especially Shatner and Kelley who she shared a significant amount of screen time with.

Agreed. Wonder why they never brought her back?

I don't know if any of you Barrows admirers read any of the books, but if so, you might enjoy McCoy: Crucible, by David R. George III. Barrows plays a significant role in that.

She also pops up in Gemini by Mike W. Barr, and the last issue of DC's first Star Trek comic, in a story by Martin Pasko and Grey Morrow. And probably a few other places I'm forgetting about.

I know Shore Leave was heavily re-written by Roddenberry at the last minute, but does anyone know what Rand's involvement would've been had she remained? Surely, Rand and McCoy would not have been an item?
