Ghostbusters 2016: Talk about the movie(s).

Re: Ghostbusters reboot: Yes, it has WOMEN

Just find it funny that you're still the board's self-appointed White Knight

Aaaand there it is. :rommie:

I find it funny just how few of the people who seriously use the term "White Knight" have worked out how it makes them look.

Admittedly, not a term I've ever used before, but with Maxwell it kind of fits.

On a serious note though; I can see why people would see the term "chick flick" as dismissive and borderline offensive when used in a certain context, but I had no idea the singular term "chick" was seen as such. Most of the women I know, both socially and in work, call each other "chick" all the time. Like it's the female version of "mate". Must be a UK thing.

Re: Ghostbusters reboot: Yes, it has WOMEN

I'm not a fan of the word "chick," but I'm also not a fan of the word "babe," "broad," or any other diminutive directed towards women. It's definitely a regional thing, if it's popular in the UK. Over here in my neck of the woods, it's definitely meant as a diminutive, and insult.

Re: Ghostbusters reboot: Yes, it has WOMEN

I've gone from being annoyed to amused, mostly for the following reasons.

1) Several of you can't just admit something along the lines of "Yeah, okay, 'chick flick' itself isn't an inherently offensive term, though like any word or phrase, it could be used offensively depending on context and intent."

2) Most of the same people in this thread keep crying about how people who disagree with them won't stop posting in disagreement to them instead of just "letting it go." All the while posting ten times as rapidly and vehemently to not only spew that, but continue to scream and shout their opinion on the matter.

3) The sheer level of trolling going on simply because of points 1 and 2.

4) The unquestionable hypocrisy of points 1, 2, and 3.

And with that said, and unlike the aforementioned people, I actually am done.

How exactly does one scream and shout on an Internet bulletin board where everything is conveyed using text?

Re: Ghostbusters reboot: Yes, it has WOMEN

If anyone is going to be the white knight of anything, I think it'd be me.

Just sayin'

Some say that he has defended the honor of countless women, but always with their permission and blessing.

Some say that it has been 15 years since he offended someone, but he is ashamed it hasn't been longer.

All we know... is he's called the White Knight Stig.

Re: Ghostbusters reboot: Yes, it has WOMEN

This grows tiresome. Now you must ASK to stay.

Emilia, you must've had an aneurism when you saw Khan treating McGivers like that.
[nerd] If you're going to quote "Space Seed" you should use a picture from "Space Seed".
This is Trek board for God's sake! [/nerd]

Will BigJake and CorporalCaptain also be banished from the Kingdom of Men?
Yes. Leave the penis and testicles at the exit.

Yeah. I am still bamboozled why people wouldn't just admit the Earth is flat.

Re: Ghostbusters reboot: Yes, it has WOMEN

My Fiance uses the tern 'Chick Flick' to describe the type of movies she enjoys watching- we do not really have much of a term for what I like to watch aside from 'Those Films' (which typically include either large explosions or spaceships or large exploding spaceships).

Re: Ghostbusters reboot: Yes, it has WOMEN

Just find it funny that you're still the board's self-appointed White Knight. If there's ever a discussion about what offends women, you can guarantee you'll be up to your arse in it.

Proposal - Godwin's Law Corollary #852.6: If someone uses the term "White Knight" to describe a man who is merely decrying the treatment of a member of a group that has traditionally enjoyed less privileges in general, or of a woman/women specifically, they are in effect conceding the argument.

Re: Ghostbusters reboot: Yes, it has WOMEN

So we agree, "chick flick" shouldn't be used.

So what DO we generalize the movies that we know are created for a female demographic that most men would never go out of their way to see because, hey, it's okay to admit we really do often like different things, our brains are different and that's not a bad thing?

Is it really debated that more women went to the theatre willingly to watch "Eat, Pray, Love" than men? Is it really a problem that most men would probably dismiss the movie as not for them? Does it really matter what they call it, they still won't see it, why get offended by that?

(But there's no way I'd put the new Ghostbusters at all under this category, despite the all woman cast, for the record. It's more a content thing than a cast thing)

Re: Ghostbusters reboot: Yes, it has WOMEN

If we can agree, at least generally, that the whole "chick flick" sidebar came up only because the term was misapplied to the new Ghostbusters, then there probably isn't much of a need here for us to square the circle of what to call a certain other category of film. How to categorize things and what to call the categories evolve over time. We can't really solve all that here.

Re: Ghostbusters reboot: Yes, it has WOMEN

Are nerds still afraid of women after all these years?
