Ghostbusters 2016: Talk about the movie(s).

Re: Ghostbusters reboot: Yes, it has WOMEN

Extreme Ghostbusters was awesome.

Re: Ghostbusters reboot: We're (almost, maybe, sorta) ready to believe

There's already a twitter account called Ghostsplaining, which does the job of "RT'ing sad dudes who cannot process that women are ruining their childhood."

And like elsewhere in the internet, a lot (a LOT) of those tweets are echoed in this very thread, and then backtracked to try and save face when they're called out for sexism and hostility against the idea that women can make good stories, or that they also shared in the very same childhood that men grew up with.

Re: Ghostbusters reboot: Yes, it has WOMEN

I feel I can't make any comments about all this without it being lost in a sea of toxicity. So other than having Feig directing, an all-female team and the suggested casting is anything else known about the movie?

Re: Ghostbusters reboot: Yes, it has WOMEN

Other than knowing they'll be busting ghosts and causing havok wherever they go? Nope. It's all conjecture at this point. It's way too early tell at this point which direction they're taking it in.

Re: Ghostbusters reboot: We're (almost, maybe, sorta) ready to believe

...someone's definition of a chick flick, a term that is rather ridiculously vague to begin with?
It's no different than calling a movie a children's movie or a family film. It's just an identifier used to describe the general audience the movie is aimed at. The people who keep trying to shove "romance and love" into the definition is what's maddening, as if that's the only thing that attracts women to something.

It's a great, funny film. This insane need to constantly fit all art into genres is so limiting.
Why? That's how the human brain works. The use of categories, archetypes, and stereotypes is one of the many reasons you've managed to survive since birth.

The people who think such things are ridiculous or, even worse, insulting are the ones who are self-delusional and crazy.

 Yes, it's "crazy" to question the use of genre terms. I'm "self-delusional" to ask about it. WTF?

Genres are used also to sell films and it has long prohibited films that try to do more than one thing from gaining wide release. It's the reason many independent films suffer; they don't fall neatly into one category and therefore marketers don't know how to sell them. The obsession the film going public has with making sure everything lands in a specific genre is one reason why we don't have as many good films as we should have.

We're apparently not going to call Enrique to see if he wants tickets for opening night. :p

Just trick him, like they did with Bridesmaids. ;)

They're hugging all the time, though. If they ever make a movie it'd be the perfect chick flick. Manly men hugging... a lot.

This strikes me as rather funny. Particularly as men don't like to be seen hugging, especially with other men...

I hug some of my guy acquaintances.

Chick flick vague?

I thought ALL genres were vague.

Action? Drama?

A lot of different types of action films: cop movies (which could have its own subgenre, I.e. French Connection and Lethal Weapon are pretty different), martial arts movies (IP Man and Rumble in the Bronx are different), action-comedy.

Drama? That could be Godfather, a gangster film. Cabaret, a musical drama. Rocky, an action drama.

All genres are vague, Sidious.

Well, someone's got to keep it fresh. We can't just have the same old shit laying around.

Re: Ghostbusters reboot: We're (almost, maybe, sorta) ready to believe

Ghostbusters is my all time favorite movie and I'm willing to give this reboot a chance, as I love Kristen Wiig. My only request is they don't resort to the typical Melissa McCarthy "I'm bigger and loud, so I'm automatically hilarious" humor. My only other tweak I would make would be to cast Aisha Tyler.

Yes, and they're getting retweeted by that twitter user.

I dunno, I think using a potentially dismissive term like "chick" as the subject (as opposed to "family" or "children's" or "kids" says a lot about the implications of the term.

The people who keep trying to shove "romance and love" into the definition is what's maddening, as if that's the only thing that attracts women to something.
This definitely doesn't help.

I'm telling you, there's nothing manlier than the sweet embrace of a true bear hug.

Sadly, my best and oldest buddy is quite averse to PDA, otherwise I would hug him every time we meet.

Hello. I hear you like bear hugs. I also like bear hugs.

I think that's overly sensitive.

I'm certainly not offended when something is referred to as a guy movie.

In fact! The very first time I heard the term "chick flick" was from a girl, which is probably why I don't view it as an offensive term.

"Aw, you just didn't like it because it was a chick flick. ::laughter::"

And then I thought, "Chick flick! That's it! That's exactly what this movie was!"

(The movie in question was "The Other Sister" with Juliette Lewis, Giovanni Ribisi and Diane Keaton.)

We were reviewing it for the college newspaper.

Re: Ghostbusters reboot: Yes, it has WOMEN

Since when is "guy" a term that's often used in pejorative contexts?

"Chick" surely is.

Taking that into account means that "chick flick" is a rather dismissive term. So the terms "guy movie" and "chick flick" aren't even remotely comparable.

Also: The excuse "I've heard women use the term!" is of zero relevance to the issue. Sexism and sexist language are a cultural phenomenon that doesn't only affect men.
