DC's New 52: Reviews and Discussion (Spoilers welcolme and likely)

The difference is Joe Quesada was actually competent and actually was able to get good creative teams on books for long runs. Not withstanding crap like Sins Past and OMD, together with Jemas he launched the Ultimates line with Millar and Bendis and for the normal stuff you had Bendis writing DD, Brubaker on Captain America, JMS on Thor, Fraction on Iron Man, Pak on Hulk, Slott on Spider-Man, the revitalization of the cosmic Marvel side of things and GotG (that spawned the movie) with DnA as well as stuff like Civil War. In contrast for Didio at DC there was just never a prioritization at maintaining creators on books for long runs (except for Johns on Lantern and Morrison on Batman and both of these were the work of Pete Tomasi). If you look at the statistics of the One Year Later soft-reboot that happened post-Infinite Crisis, the majority of creators were gone within two years. You see the same pattern on Nu52.

There was a recent interview with Devin Grayson and she pretty much said that he pretty much hated the idea of Nightwing (as well as the Earth Angel Supergirl), management made writing the book incredibly difficult constantly requesting changes to scripts (which mirrors the interview Fialkov gave to Bleedingcool about Nu52) and that she was never even told about what he was planning to do (the destruction of Bludhavn and the death of Nightwing). I think it really shows the problem with his style of management at DC basically taking these unilateral actions (ordering Nightwing to be killed or Barry to be brought back and DC Universe to be rebooted), without consulting anyone (including the writer for these characters and their books) and why you have this constant revolving door of creators on books with few of them staying more than two years.

Some interesting bits about Didio's early ideas for Infinite Crisis. It's interesting that he also wanted to do undo the Clark/Lois marriage with Infinite Crisis, which he did get with Flashpoint. I'm guessing the scene where SBP killed a bunch of Titans was probably his idea.

 

I find it funny that it's at the top of the page. They've been trying to do this for years now and the relaunch finally gave them the opportunity to do it.

Out of the "Convergence" titles the pregnant Lois and powerless Superman one is probably the one I'm going to get.

 

I finally dropped the Finches "Wonder Woman" after giving it two issues...while it's not totally dreadful, just not for me either and I'm still depressed about Azzy and Chiang ending their run

Not caught up on "Batman/Superman" yet.

 

I think or hope that the Finches (and also Kreisberg on Green Arrow) are just there until Convergence starts and finishes.

Also everyone should pick up the Multiversity Guidebook. It's probably one of the best thing Morrison has written in a long time imo even if it's just a travelogue.

It's looking more and more like the Joker actually IS an immortal satanic figure! Wow. I was really interested in these revelations about the virus and the Joker having strange regenerative powers. Gordon shot him and he came back; it seems to be true. And they found pictures of him throughout history! If this is a fake-out, I'd feel a little cheated.

And holy crap! Batman is going to the Court of Owls for help against the Joker! I did NOT see that coming!!!

I'm assuming "Birdman" was Dick Grayson? They never IDed the character. And was the crazy doctor guy someone famous I should know?

I would have put Our Worlds At War and Infinite Crisis much, much higher. Those are my favorites. And why in the world would they rank Legends and Forever Evil so high?! And Final Crisis at number one?! What?!

agreed. Final Crisis was pretty awful. really loved Infinite Crisis and Blackest Night. Forever Evil had some good parts but was kinda bleh.

 

Yes the Multiversity Guidebook is incredibly awesome and as I thought well worth the wait. He's made me like Lil'Gotham now!

 

^I thought it was particular brilliant how he managed to fix the New Gods and explain away the divergent versions in the DC Animated, Kingdom Come and NuDCU. Also the idea that there was another hand in the creation story of the DC Universes is just so Morrison.

On its own as a standalone FE reads much better as just a character piece of Luthor and a bunch of villains team up to fight the evil Justice League. It's also certainly better imo than its Marvel counterpart: Axis.

 

Forever Evil: Rogue's Rebellion was really the only thing I really liked from Forever Evil. It made me want a Rogue's book by the same author.

 

I remember a lot of hate for "Our Worlds at War," but I personally enjoyed it. It was the storyline that got me back into comics.

I would have rated Flashpoint much lower. I did not enjoy it, at all. It was every one of Geoff Johns' alternate reality cliches rolled into one.

And, personally, "DC One Million" is my favorite DC crossover, ever.

 

I agree Forever Evil was better than Axis. Axis ended up being a big disappointment despite my initial excitement.

I also was not very impressed with Flashpoint as I generally think "what if?" stories are a waste of time and don't "count". (Age of Apocalypse being the awesome exception) I feel the same way about House of M. Yes, the ending has big consequences. But the actual bulk of the story doesn't.

interesting how they have made Earth-one graphic novels literally Earth-one - I could have dreamed this but I thought the original plan was that they were a) entirely standalone and b) Earth-one was a label not that each character was on a shared Earth-one.

 

I don't think that has been the case since Earth-One Teen Titans because Jeff Lemire has commented before on the chronology between Teen Titans and Superman.

 

I'd reorder this list as

1. Blackest Night
The last great Hurrah for the Post-Crisis DCU before Flashpoint rebooted things. Brightest Day is a good read too.

Yeah I believe that JMS or Geoff Johns stated that the plan was to keep these self-contained and separate from each other but I guess that has changed.

 

Or the very real possibility that Grant Morrison and DC are not entirely on the same page.

I think that's more than a possibility as we've discussed before but at least with the multiverse concept they seem to be on the same page or else we'd never have got something like the guidebook. There are plenty of examples to go through and some of which have been brought up in this thread before so no need to into it again. Just an interesting thing that "Earth One" appears to be it's own universe now.
