David Morrissey as the Doctor

Joe Washington

When I first saw David Morrissey in The Next Doctor, I enjoyed the idea of the Doctor meeting his next incarnation. That, whatever, turned out to be a ruse. But imagine a scenario in which it wasn't a ruse, that David Morrissey's character was really the next Doctor. What kind of Doctor he would have made in the long run?

This thread was inspired by the following article: http://www.doctorwhotv.co.uk/what-if-david-morrissey-was-the-doctor-56555.htm

I would love to see another appearance by Jackson Lake. I wish RTD had written the tenth Doctor/Jackson Lake novel that he talked about.

My major problem with "The Next Doctor" was that, once the mystery surrounding "the next Doctor" was solved, Lake becomes a non-character in the story. He doesn't even get to save his own son.

And, I think Morrissey would've made a great Doctor.

Yes that's my main problem with The Next Doctor. Lake should have been saving his son while Ten was defeating the Cybermen.

I like David Morrissey but I have to say he never really comes across very Doctory imo

He might have done a nice Doctor with a bit of a mix between 5 and 2?

Telling a multidoctor story with a future doctor would be fun but difficult to pull off, because it robs the new doctor a bit of his buzz in his actual premier episode.

The only way I think it might work would be to do it as the actual regeneration episode.

The Doctor would meet his future self, they have an adventure together and it ends with the current doctor regenerating into the new one right before the now past doctor stumbles onto the scene meeting the now current doctor for the first time and they are off having their adventure all over again!

Neat idea!

Really - no, make that REALLY can't stand Morrisey, so that's a big NO to ever wanting to see Jackson Lake again.

Unless he's regenerated...

Be funny if the next Doctor started off as the new companion for half the series, still not knowing the the companion is the Doctor the entire way through. Then at the regeneration episode, have the Doctor regenerate with the "companion" supposedly lost on the TARDIS, which leaves because the Doctor preset something.

The newly regenerated Doctor finds he looks like his companion and is confused and attempts to justify this problem, Stuff that seems familiar starts to happen only for the TARDIS to arrive. The Doctor goes to see only to see his previous self get out to help...the new "companion". (You could then rewatch the previous half season again knowing the Doctor is on an adventure with his past self while trying to maintain the timeline). The following series them pickup with the "companion" in charge of the TARDIS as they were the Doctor the whole time, just had to get to this point to get the TARDIS back.

You could potentially do it with a future Doctor from an undisclosed regeneration. It doesn't necessarily have to be the next Doctor. Hell, at this point the Doctor has got all sorts of new regenerations to work with. It could be one from way, way, way in his future.

That's already been done with Tom Baker's future possible Doctor (who we'll probably never see) in Day of the Doctor.
I suspect that the closest we'll ever get to a proper appearance is Capaldi's cameo in Day.

The Next Doctor is an excellent story and David Morrissey is a fine actor, but really the idea of Jackson Lake being a future Doctor was little more than a gimmick in the story. And really Jackson Lake turned out to be a good man but in the end a wealty man full of bluster, it really should've been up the real Doctor to save the day and even Lake's son.

The idea of seeing a future Doctor is a gimmick at best and not really a good idea. Look at the Valeyeard another good idea that really doesn't work in the long run, there were people thinking that John Hurt was oging to end up being the Valeyard.

We sort of had a "Future Doctor" storyline with the Watcher in Logopolis, and we see another time lord with a projection of his future self in Planet Of The Spiders.

Although the Watcher didn't look anything like Peter Davison (more like a shrouded/mummy look), he clearly could communicate (Although off-screen) and operate the TARDIS, and seemed to know what we going to happen-and then of course there's the Valeyard, already mentioned.

Why? surely the message of Doctor Who is that anyone can be a hero, the journalist, the cowardly public schoolboy, the air hostess, the male nurse...why shouldn't the same apply to Lake, especially when his own son was at stake? The guy didn't even get to fly his own Tardis :(

I was very disappointed with RTD over that episode, I think the sidelining of Lake annoyed me even more than the giant robot.

With all complaints about Clara taking over the show and Rose before her it would seem that that's not what people really want to see. The Doctor is the main character not his companions or guest stars. We've had a full season where the new Doctor had little to do with saving the day and look at the result.

In the end Jackson Lake was a confused man who the Doctor helped to fix. And I loved the Cyberking in the climax, it gave the story a sense of epicness that it needed.
