So name a subtle moment in any ST that you thought was well done.

Great subtle and funny moment in First Contact.
Jean-Luc Picard
: Don't worry, Number One. We'll still have you to Betazed with plenty of time to spare.
William Riker: Thank you, sir.
Jean-Luc Picard: [to Worf] Where we will all honor the Betazoid tradition [regarding nude marriages]. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'll be in the gym.

Nemesis :techman:

I like it in TWOK when they're about to send the order to Reliant's computer system to drop her shields and Kirk tells Sulu to lock phasers and await his command.

Sulu doesn't move his head or eyes at all, bearly moves his hands to establish the lock and softly mutters "phasers locked" so as not to betray anything to Khan, and even though he says it very quiet and subdued there's an edge in his words where you can almost him thinking "Boy Khan you're about to get one hell of a shock and I am going to enjoy it immensely when I press the fire button."
The followup scene is also good- Khan's reaction to learning that the shields are dropping. The camera switches to his point of view as he frantically looks around the console for the override- you get the feeling that he is, for that moment, overwhelmed by the complex technology it takes to control a modern starship...

Yeah that overwhelmed expression on Khan's face was excellent. The quick back and forth shot they did of the front control station like Khan is looking at it and thinking "Where the hell is the button I need to press to reraise that shields in all of this shit" was also perfect.

Seriously it's those little things that make a good movie great. I watched that scene over and over again because you want to freeze those shots because they happen so quickly. I did the same thing when the Enterprise gets hit by Reliant and they show a quick shot of the control panel that had roll and pitch indicators to show how the ship was reacting to being hit.

I recall the theater audience back in 1982 laughing when Khan's expression changes after the shields drop. Blu-ray, streaming and giant TVs are great, but I do sometimes miss the experience of watching a movie in a theater with a full enthusiastic audience.

THE VOYAGE HOME: Kirk's double-take when he takes his first swig of Michelob beer at the restaurant. A "Hmm, what's this?" reaction, although I can't tell whether said reaction is favorable or not.

TNG THE NEUTRAL ZONE: When Offenhouse hisses his "They haven't got a clue!" comment. Not so subtle in and of itself, but has slashing hand motion and "WTF, don't you Starfleet morons see this?!?!?!?" expression cap it off

TNG LOWER DECKS: After Joret Dal cuffs Sito Jaxa and returns to the helm, actress Shannon Fill appears to almost shiver as she sits in solitude, takes a big breath and braces for what's ahead.

TNG LOWER DECKS (PART 2): Nurse Ogawa's reaction to hearing of the loss of Jaxa. Either the gasp or the hand motion alone would have worked, but both together, along with Patti Yasutake's eyes, make this one of the strongest moments in the whole series

TNG EYE OF THE BEHOLDER: Data asks Geordi some human-behavior question and as Geordi ponders his response, then answers, he crosses his arms as he is want to do. Data notices the gesture and attempts to mimic it, but does do very awkwardly and stiffly

TNG JOURNEY TO FARPOINT: lastly, Commanderette Lusty checking out Riker's junk

Regarding Brent Spiner's performance as a whole, I've heard a number of people on the show, including directors, that Spiner's performance was one of a kind. Playing an android was nothing new in TV at the time, but the kind of character he imbued on someone with no emotions, the type of mannerisms Data used to suggest very tiny clues that could be read for any personal drama, was a singular talent. Anybody could play an android, but only Spiner could play Data. That's 7 years and 4 movies of subtlety right there, which sounds counter intuitive but speaks of his abilities as an actor..

Nemesis :techman:

Doh! Nemesis is correct BillJ.
Maybe I saw it after the timeline changed and I was in the Abramsverse when this happened in First Contact instead of Nemesis. Or I'm just embarrassed and lying.

Yeah I agree. I remember in TSFS the audience laughing loudy three times in a minute when Kirk goes to break out McCoy. First when Kirk says how many fingers am I holding up doing the vulcan salute. Second when McCoy says that green blooded SOB it his revenge for all those arguments he lost and third, and loudest, when Sulu says "Don't call me tiny.

It is nice to share those moments with others

11001001. When we first get a view of the pair, 10-01, 01 sees Riker. While moving along 10 takes a gander at Riker as well. Next moment we see 10 look toward 01 which leads to a look back and and smile of delight. Simple looks can do so much. What I pictured in my mind.

01: "Oh, hello."
-
10: "Yes I think so."
-
10: "He'll do nicely."
01: "I thought so too."

So I just saw one watching "Starship Mine" I'd never noticed before.

So when Picard sees the way out of the banquet he clearly dreads being at by going on a horse ride. He says he's going back to the Enterprise to get his saddle and some Crusher and LaForge start grilling him about the saddle, clearly knowing he's using it as an opportunity to bail, Picard is awkwardly explaining about how a saddle is so personal and most riders carry one at most times.

He's backing up towards the door while talking, clearly super excited to get out there but not wanting to show it. When he finishes talking he turns around and slightly bumps into the wall that he backed up to........It was really amusing because it showed he was so excited that but was so busy trying to disguise it that he wasn't even paying attention to his surroundings and backed up too close to a wall and the bumps it in his hurry to get out there.

It was so non Picard in its awkardness, but subtly showed how badly he wanted to get the hell out of there.

I'm doing the crazy thing and rewatching TFF (thanks, Netflix!), and I just noticed one moment in the camp fire scene. When they're trying to figure out what song to sing, McCoy comes up with "Row Row Row Your Boat." Kirk, delighted and excited at the idea, repeats it in agreement, but says "row" a few more times -- "Row Row Row... Row Row Your Boat!"

I always thought it was just another silly Shatnerism or something awkward in delivery, but I just realized that Kirk and McCoy had been drinking Tennessee Whiskey, too. That explains it!

Another one soon after, right after they're picked up and go to the turbolift:

Kirk: I could use a shower.

(beat)

Spock: Yes.

Yeah, Kirk and McCoy are both half in the bag in that scene. :)

Just watched this episode earlier this week.
I love the part where Picard pawns off Commander 'Soon to be dead guy' on Data. Who is doing an impression of him and they go on endlessly talking back and forth about nothing.

In WRATH of KHAN, when Khan crippled the Enterprise the first time and Kirk still didn't know it was him, yet, he tells Uhura to put his unknown assailant onscreen so he can surrender and Uhura almost whispers, "Admiral ..." in a pleading manner. I can't be sure, but I believe it was sampled right off of the set, as it doesn't sound "perfect," so it makes the moment even more believable. Unfortunately, this is followed up by a horribly acted voice-over, her telling Kirk, "onscreeen, sir." But until then, what a great line and delivery for Uhura.

Speaking of Uhura there's a really interesting subtle moment in TOS.

In Naked Time, when drunk Sulu grabs her and says 'my fair maiden' she says says, "sorry, neither" and maneuvers herself out of it.

She's saying she's black and possibly-she's not a virgin either.

Nichelle Nichols has said before that she's saying exactly that, and as Nichelle, not as Uhura. The director didn't get, and kept it in.

That's so cool, I had no idea that was an ad lib.

On the one hand, she could be saying she's not weak and innocent. But the classic definition of maiden is a virgin so

It's amazing how certain things can get past like that.

Wink of An Eye is another one--

Deela and Kirk were in Kirk's quarters, nuzzling and kissing and then the scene breaks to Spock doing something. When it returns to Kirk, he's sitting on the corner of the bed adjusting his boots. Deela is brushing her hair.

Very subtle, suggestive scene. I heard no one will admit to it though.
