Armin Shimerman in Quark makeup on Live with Regis & Kathie Lee

In point of fact there were FOUR Ferengi in "The Last Outpost" and the first one seen is Daimon Tarr via the viewer, played by Mike Gomez. As such Shimmerman isn't the first Ferengi the audience sees.

What would "the original Ferengi" mean to an actor? Not the first one the audience sees on screen -- it would be the first one in rehearsal or the first one with a significant role.

Who cares? The Ferengi back then were just annoying and creepy. Quark is the first Ferengi with dimensions, even endearing qualities at times.

Well, there was that scientist that seemed sympathetic but he wasn't as complex a character as Quark.

I had no idea that was Iggy Pop, but I obviously know exactly which one he was. There weren't many. He did a nice job. Very dry. Gave you the impression he would roll his eyes if you got your blood on him during your execution.

I do agree that Iggy probably couldn't have pulled it off for the entire run, he doesn't have Jeffery Combs' acting chops by a long shot.

For a celebrity one-shot character cameo, he did a hell of a job with it.

"No not in five minutes....NOW!" I love the way he delivers that line.

Yes, I like the way he says "Kill her.", about Ishka of course. Very casual.
