John Hurt Knighted

For those who like British drama and also Who fans, John Hurt appears as Caligula with Derek Jacobi in the I Claudius series (Although it takes a few episodes to get to Caligula and the non-elderly Claudius). Funny thing is, I definetly got a Simm Master feeling about Hurt's portrayal of Caligula, who is insane, OTT and also hears sounds in his head pretty much.

Hurt I think also played a time traveller in Frankenstein Unbound, except it was a time-travelling car :)

The series also has had many other actors who have appeared in Doctor Who (most notably Brian Blessed who plays Augustus). Plus Patrick Stewart is also in the series in a short but key role.

^ I, Claudius really starts taking off at around the time Stewart first appears and Jacobi enters the narrative, imo. Stewart struck me as a bit Kirkish, actually. (Saw it a couple of years ago or so.)

Patricia Quinn (Livilla) and Fiona Walker (Agrippina the Elder) were also in a couple of Classic Who stories (Dragonfire and Silver Nemesis, respectively). Fiona Walker appeared many years before, too, in a First Doctor story (The Keys of Marinus).

George Baker (Tiberius) appeared in a Fourth Doctor story (Full Circle). There are likely other actors as well who appeared in both series.

When was he "Kirkish"? He was an absolute villain in I, Claudius. The one redeeming quality Sejanus had was that he genuinely cared for his children and grieved that they were executed.

The most bizarre scene John Hurt played in I, Claudius has to be the dance. Claudius and Caligula's brothers-in-law are summoned to the Palace in the middle of the night and are treated to... this:

Caligula is made up to resemble his sister, Drusilla, whom he murdered in the previous episode. The young woman toward the end of the scene is Messalina, who becomes Claudius' third wife.

When was he "Kirkish"?
Whenever he got some tail or came across as a man of action. ;)
Kirk never threatened to have a woman gang-raped, nor did he forge documents and torture the men he was framing for treason. He also never ordered his enemies' sons thrown into prison and starved to death.
