Federaton Citadel colony map

This is a work in progress.

I am going to create a 2D set of a Starfleet colony established in the 25th century in another galaxy, for an animation I'm working on. It is built on an island next to a large waterfall that partially powers the city. On the far side of the island there is a ship yard. On the main land is the mineral mines.

I have made a map with all the main buildings of the city that I can think will have a legit purpose to be there. I'll be adding surplus building once I have laid down the essentials.

I'm just wondering if there are important services or buildings I may have overlooked or maybe misplaced some of them. Any ideas guys?

You stated power comes from the waterfall and that there are mines, but are they noted on the map? A power generator station, even in the 25th century, might be a large structure.

Is there a fire/rescue building? Security/police/jail? Unless there is no crime in the 25th century ;)

Mundane services like waste treatment? I don't know what technological advances will be like in the area of sewage. Maybe those things won't be large structures anymore.

I see a workshop tower, but does that cover all construction buildings and equipment? Industrial replicators?

How big is this colony? Small enough to have only 1 school/education annex yet large enough to have a branch of Starfleet Academy?

lf they have a Starfleet Academy, do they have any other Starfleet related structures or facilities?

Very nice map. Keep it up.

Thanks for your advice Shawnster. I did consider a waste plant. But I remember the TNG tech manual stating that lavatory waste is broken down into chemical elements using replicator technology. But I guess there's more waste than that happening so I will add a water and waste matter purification assembly.

I didn't show it on the map, but the shipyards will be behind the mountains to keep the eyesores from JJ Abrams films out of view for the colonists.

The colony started off with 1200 colonists and grows to 5000 at the time of this map.

I considered a fire station. But decided against it as I would assume the buildings would have the fire suppression forcefields of a starship. But then again if the colony was attacked it would definitely need those services . So thanks again for the advice.

Hikers, mountain climbers. People will still get hurt. Transporters could handle the search and rescue perhaps. With your suggestion about the waste disposal from the tech manual, a treatment plant wouldn't need to be that big after all.

Forcefields, fire suppression.. I wan't thinking very Star Trek, was I?

If your colony has 20,000 residents, then it might reflect the layout of a current city of that size. You might enjoy looking at some maps of small cities for a general feel.

Another suggestion - most cities currently are moving sports arenas downtown and building an entertainment district with shops and restaurants within walking distance. Airports are further away from the city center. Since this is a colony and not a full size planet, your people may go to the sports arena more often than the shuttleport. They may want the sports arena closer to town.

How large a population are you planning for the planet as a whole? I suspect that 20,000 wouldn't be enough for both a shipyard and everything else you want your colony site to have.

I don't want to go into too much detail as I want to keep the plot the secret. The colony is going to be abandoned when it is discovered, so the population isn't relevant.

I have no idea about numbers of colonists I was making a guestimate at 20k but then I thought it was too high. But now you suggest that 20k isn't enough so I am unsure what number to go for hahaha.

This colony was setup out of necessity to protect the crew of a ship unable to travel at warp any more, rather than it being a planned colonisation. It wasn't built as a permanent home. They chose the island to build the city as it is in a prime location geologically. The ship yard was created to build a new small fleet. The planet is only half the size of earth.

Great suggestions. I lived near a football (soccer)stadium and it annoyed me with the traffic and noise. I wouldn't choose to live near the noise ,hence why Imoved it away from the city center. Also its easily accessed via the monorail

This may seem cheesy, but since we're talking about an obviously spacefaring society here, I would think many of their needs would be best met off-world, especially by 25th-century (or presumably even 22nd century) standards. Example: power; they may have solar-power satellites in orbit above them, so that spacecraft fabrication, other heavy industry, transporter beams, and subspace radio could be powered indefinitely without planetary rotation or weather interfering. Perhaps the waterfall was a first step before a satellite network was established. (I assume that their advanced technology would allow solar energy to be beamed wirelessly to the planet's surface with ease.)

Also: I agree with previously stated sentiments that futuristic cities would prize "pedestrian pocket" design over sprawl. The most elegant European cities of today discourage automobiles in favor of encouraging everything you need to be within a short walk, bicycle ride, or mass-transit ride. That's one thing that would be neat to see in the far future that's already been around for centuries: bicycles.

Perhaps, instead of segregated suburbs spread out in the distance away from the center-city, the community might instead be a series of smaller, interconnecting hubs, each with its own central facility or industry, surrounded by residential neighborhoods and parks.

For off-world resources, the flow might look like this:

asteroid mining -> low-speed transport ships -> transport-receiving facilities/refineries in high-orbit -> transporter beams from high orbit, relayed by low-orbit satellites -> refined materials beamed to industrial centers on planet surface, processed into working parts for consumable items

For spacecraft (and space stations, and satellites) fabrication, many components might be re-routed to high-orbit dockyards instead of being sent to the planet surface.

For power, it might look like this...

large, high-orbit "mirror focus" generator satellites -> small low-orbit relays -> beaming power to surface -> surface relay substations distribute power

How big a sports fan are you? 25th century sound proofing and advanced transportation might cut noise down.

I hate watching sports period. Maybe Wimbeldon on TV at a stretch and ice skating. I think travelling out of the city to the stadium would be a nice outing for people to get away from the busy metropolis.

The stadium won't feature in the sets I'm creating anyway. I just wanted to lay down all the essential areas of the colony. Having the stadium closer to the center makes me think of the Roman colluseum.

This is what I had in mind. I would expect virtually no traffic other than public. I agree about the community hubs. If I was going to plan an entire colony of 20,000 I would go down that route. But for the illustration I'm concentrating on the main centre and outskirts.

1 of the most important buildings I forgot to ass was the pub!:rommie: Featured in every series of Trek in 1 form or another. Life in the future would need plenty of boozers- hopefully synthehol free

Nice work, my friend. It offers some great possibilities for a lot of scene designs. Looking forward to seeing more...and YES...a pub is a must! :)

I'm using adobe flash cs5.5
Everything is hand drawn. I contrmplated using sketchup. But I'm not very good with it.

Thanks Ro.

Added some more detail. The octogons on the ground are solar panels that also provide roads

Well, I just discovered this, but I love watching the progression and development.

Please keep up the good work and thank you for sharing! :)
