The Old Yeller...

I think your utter dislike for a fictional character from a decades old show is unhealthy.
Not as unhealthy as your inability to stop getting personal in a discussion about a fiction. Can you leave your personal animosity toward me out of these exchanges? One could think that I have just slighted your sister. It's a fictional character for Pete's sake!!! You said so yourself. How ironic! When ever did I insult you the way you did insult me repeatedly? Who do you think you are? If you continue these personal attacks I am going to report you to the moderators.

Kirk is likeable.

Likability is subjective. It's dificult to say "X is likable/unlikable" because what is likeable to me or you might not be to the next person, it's like saying "red is the best colour". I for one find nothing likable in Kirk. He's, in my eyes, a smug, womanizing bogan. My dislike of Riker stems from him being so Kirk like in the early seasons.

his hurt when he realized that he had to let her die.
But would he have cared if he hadn't been attracted to her?
And is he sorry for Edith because she lost her life or is he sorry for himself because he lost his latest squeeze?

Riker also tried to save Yuta and Soren and was hurt when he had to kill Yuta to save that alien prime minister and when Soren was brainwashed back into the mindset of hir species.

Riker does have a tendency to yell when giving orders. But then he'll chill out and be joking around pretty quickly. For instance when he goes into Barclay's simulation and then it starts to get humorous when goddess Troi shows up. Jonathon Frakes has a loud booming voice even out of character I think.

Well, opinions are funny things. One of my buddy's ex-girlfriends didn't like Kirk for unspecified reasons. She always referred to him as Captain Jerk.

She didn't like Riker, either, because he, and I quote, "was mean to Data"!

The thing is, I like Frakes. I mean, I don't know him personally, but from seeing him interviewed and watching outtakes, personally I think he seems like he would be a fun guy to be around. I credit him as an actor to be able to be such a likable fellow, playing a character who is at most only superficially likable.

I would say my favorite Riker moments are the ones in which Frakes breaks character and stops, if only for a moment, playing Riker, and instead plays Frakes. An example would be during Star Trek: Insurrection when after shaving, delivering the line "Smooth as an android's bottom, eh, Data?".

I was reminded of this thread when watching Times Arrow Pt II last night. Riker goes to Guinan to ask for spoilers and she refuses saying it might affect the outcome. She's a civilian and he YELLS at her to tell him. My other half sarcastically commented, "that's going to change her mind". It is not a good motivator, it would not make me want to follow him.

I know that when I yell at my kids I have lost the argument, they will not follow my lead. I might make them cry. Perhaps that's what Riker was doing in Ten Forward, trying to make Guinan cry.

One can only imagine how multi-centenarian Guinan must have felt being yelled at by this presumptuous pup still wet behind the ears...

To whom this may concern: It's no more weird to have a dislike for a character that, in one's opinion, mars a good series that would be improved without him than to have a devotion for said character one usually reserves to a family member or a lover.

I must admit, I never thought I'd ever see anyone use that particular epithet to describe Captain Kirk. :D
That's because it's aussie slang.

Yes I know that. Because I am an Aussie. Clearly, so is Orphalesion. That's the point. :p *We* understand what it means, but how many Americans would recognise the word? I'm just commenting light-heartedly on how unexpected it is to find it being used on a forum like this one. Context being everything. ;)

(Also my way of throwing a shout-out to Orphalesion - Aussies being thicker than blood and all that. :D )

I'm confused. I thought the Unicorn Dog in "The Enemy Within" was Star Trek's version of Old Yeller . . . .

Things is if Kirk was a real Australian bogan (from modern times) I'd probably find him easier to stomach. That be a captain I'd wanna serve under

I can see it: all the bridge chairs have drink holders, instead of that weird tunic or Picard's jacket the Captain's uniform would come in a singled/shorts combination (shoes optional), they'd stop on planets for barbeques and even diplomatic banquets would be REAL fun.
It would be bliss!
