I wonder why the other movies' endings don't work for you? I find it odd you don't find the end of TWOK "uplifting". The sequence of Kirk's "I feel young", the camera discovering Spock's pod amidst the greenery, and then Spock's sepulchral voice giving the "final frontier" speech - it gets me every time.
TSFS ending with "Jim, your name is Jim" is also good. Even NEM has a nicely touching moment at the end, when Picard hears B-4 try to sing the song Data sang at the beginning of the film.

The 'I feel young' bit makes me well up nearly as much as the death and funeral scene, but with an extremely moving feeling of hope. I thought it was still uplifting.

1. The Wrath of Khan. - Obvious: the power and adventure of TOS finally realized on the big screen, with one of its most charismatic, dangerous enemies.

2. The Undiscovered Country. - Logical conclusion to the hero/villain conflicts and long years of the 1701 crew. Went out in high, emotionally satisfying style.

3. The Search for Spock. - Natural, necessarily somber conclusion to TWOK. Much character growth for Kirk (loss to hope for Spock, death of David, and of course, the Enterprise) & McCoy (dealing with literally having the soul of his old sparring partner in his own, and the great BoP revelation scene).

4. The Voyage Home. Strong start with the Klingon reaction to TSFS events. More solid character development, and rather daring to (successfully) take an easier plot road after the dark subjects of 2 &3.

5. The Final Frontier. Dismissing the knee-jerk assault on the mere suggestion of religious themes in ST (which is strange, as it has a long TOS history), TFF's Sybok story was not only in the tradition of TOS, but provided one of the most dramatic showcases for the Big Three's inner heart in all 6 movies. Add the touching campfire scenes building on all we knew of the characters since 1966, and it was--with little doubt--head and shoulders above any other relationships seen in the NG & JJ films.

6. The Motion Picture. Yay! The gang's all here--even Rand! Kidding aside, TMP had any good intentions, Roddenberry abused certain TOS plot tendencies in his creatively weaker late 70s period. If you are going to go back to the well, recognize why the well provided what was good, instead of using it as a means to beat on a tired drum.

Great to see the OS characters back in service, but the cause was stale.

7. First Contact. The Next Generation films all have flaws--likely the result of a series that was not really suited for the big screen. That said, FC managed to light a fire under the NG concept so it was able to (temporarily) avoid the plodding leanings of the series. It is no surprise that FC is the anomaly of the NG film series, while Insurrection--almost universally derided--actually keeps mush of the tone and feel of the series.

By far my favourite is the Motion Picture, it's the only one that conjures real tension and gives me an uplifting feeling at the end. Not only did they save the day ( without having to use their phasers ) but they also helped an entity achieve its destiny. A really epic feel to the film.

For me the rest of the TOS films veer from 'meh' to 'generic action film in space' and don't engage me.

TWOK: shooty-shooty space battle flick which makes Kirk and Khan both look like idiots
TSFS: it's an OK yarn but never really excites nor generates tension
TVH: the descent of Trek into slapstick nonsense. Is this time-travel yarn really canon? Or just a dream in Spock's head as he sweats under the Vulcan suns?
TFF: could have been better without the 'humour' but closer to its TOS roots in cameraderie
TUC: it's OK, at least the characters feel real and are facing-up to their fears

As for the TNG films I watched Generations and First Contact once each and none of the rest. The two films didn't seem to have any way of resolving the challenges other than blowing stuff up.

...I prefer Trek as a series rather than movies...

The Voyage Home -- loved the sense of humor and the pacing in this one.
Search For Spock -- Genesis looks really good, not really dated, and the movie itself is pretty good.
Wrath Of Khan -- Ricardo Montalban is Khan. Period. He played it really well and the movie is really good.

i know i'm in the minority, but Star Trek V: The Final Frontier is my favorite of all the films. It could be because it was the first trek film i ever saw in theatres at the age of 10 years old. When you look past the productions woes, and get to the heart of the story, it is the most "Trek" of all the TOS films. I love the Kirk/Spock/McCoy interactions in this. The story felt so much like TOS after the last few films. My favorite scene in all of the trek films is the campfire scene.

i know i'm in the minority, but Star Trek V: The Final Frontier is my favorite of all the films. It could be because it was the first trek film i ever saw in theatres at the age of 10 years old. I can respect that TFF is your favorite for those reasons. I like the TFF characters interaction too. What also won me over was all the scenes involving the impressive set of the 1701 hangar deck complete with two shuttlecrafts.

^ I don't think any instance of Trek is perfect. The question is, do we find that the good elements compensate for the flaws? There are series and films I dislike, but I must admit even they have good parts. In the end it has to be a personal judgement.

Having given this many, many, many picoseconds of thought, since the last time I posted this, I shall regale you all with my favorites, in order, much to your edification and amusement. Also, I wish to be seen:

As some of you may have noticed, some movies fell a bit, others rose, and one in particular, Star Trek V, seems to have fallen quite a bit. My love for The Final Frontier hasn't abated, it's just that next to the other movies, it's not as much fun as it once was. I still love it dearly, and it still has a place in my heart because of its meaning to me, but if I were put in a room and told to choose my favorites, in order, this is how it would go.

Yes I think 5 is as good as the others.......

All 5 were done IN THE 80s which was awesome..... I think originally 5 was gonna be the last one,am i right on that??

6 is ok but the excitement of the movie is pretty much gone in 6... (You can tell the original casts time is just about over and it doesnt feel the same)

Yeah, because DS9, TNG, VOY, & ENT are just swelling with interest. TNG had its 20th anniversary, and the media barely noticed at all. A very different treatment when TOS reached that milestone. One was a landmark--culturally relevant, while the other was not.

No, it was never intended or announced that V would be the "last one."
