<<The official synopsis, to my recollection, is usually withheld - especially in the case of big-budget studio movies like this - until shortly before the movie is supposed to come out. The plot synopsis in today's Hollywood climate is considered a spoiler and for a movie climate where the Internet practically spoils everything, it makes total sense for that synopsis to be withheld until the last minute possible. >>

That's funny, because movie trailers nowadays completely spoil the entire movie, most especially the big final battle. That's why after I see a trailer once I never ever watch it again, or else I'm gonna know the whole damn plot, act by act, before I pay to see it. And I see a lot of movies in the theater so I close my eyes when they repeat

It's painfully obvious that you don't understand it.

"Hey people. Just a little reminder, we've got a movie that we'll release in about a year's time."

    That is the context.

Obviously this teaser fired up your curiosity.
    It's done its job well.

It's a strange teaser at best, originally meant for a limited number of theaters they realized their mistake and put it online. It might've been easier to wait another couple of months and have a slightly longer teaser for the Superbowl.

Although some studio's have really stretched the definition of what a teaser trailer is, generally speaking they're only meant to give you a flavour of the film's tone, with maybe a general sense of what this film is actually about. Sometimes without even using a single shot from the movie, but usually just a bunch of quick-cut shots and some character beats without any real plot context.

So anyway, short version: yes, this is indeed a teaser trailer. Basically all they're saying is "Look, stormtroopers! Look X-Wings! Look chick on a speeder bike and absolutely no Jar-Jar! Look a baddie! Look the Millennium mother-fucking Falcon!";)

I posted this in the TNZ discussion about the movie, but I figured I might as well post it here too.

    ______________________________________

I haven't been following this all that closely, so forgive me if some of this is contradicted by info that's already been revealed, but my bullshit theory on the general plot outline is:

Daisy Ridley is Han and Leia's daughter (possibly loosely based on Jaina Solo though not necessarily keeping the name since the EU has been wiped clean). She's Force sensitive through her mother's side and has been living on Tatooine in or near Obi-Wan's old home, since that was the last known location her uncle Luke was living in before he disappeared years ago. She originally wanted to train under him to become a Jedi, but now all she wants is a clue to his whereabouts.

The soccer ball droid is her jury-rigged astromech droid with greater mobility, showing that she possesses some of her grandfather's technical savvy. She's been tinkering with Fudgesicle speeders and droids during her off time from searching for clues about Luke and communing with the Force.

Boyega is just an average, everyday Stormtrooper, a draftee from the Outer Rim in a rapidly dwindling Empire rather than a true believer like those fanatics in the 501st Legion. He represents the everyman the audience empathizes with. He's just minding his own business, trying to serve out his time as a trooper without getting killed, bitching about how it's probably another drill and how he's sick of not finding the droids he's looking for, when suddenly he comes across information about a new cadre of dark side practitioners seeking to restore the Sith and the might of the Empire. But to do that they must eliminate the chief threat to their order, the leader of the Jedi, Luke Skywalker. So they go to Tatooine in search of clues to his recent whereabouts as well.

Boyega, having a crisis of conscience at the thought of the greatest living Jedi being hunted down and the Sith restored (the Imperial Remnant he grew up in has been devoid of the Sith until now, and they were mostly the stuff of legend until he saw their horror up close on this mission), decides to go AWOL and defect to the Rebellion or the New Republic (or whatever they're status is now) once he's on Tatooine. He heads to the starport near Ben's house --probe droids (which you can hear in the trailer) close on his tail-- and begins asking the denizens about the whereabouts of Luke. That's when he comes to the attention of Daisy Ridley and they join up. Using her knowledge about Luke and his information about the Sith resurrection and mission to kill Luke, they discover a clue and decide it's time to call for backup.

So, Han, Leia and Chewie rush to pick them up in the Millennium Falcon, arriving just in time to save them from the Imperials, and there's a rousing TIE fighter chase above the dunes that leads into space and ditching the Star Destroyer patrol above, where Han has a serious case of deja vu.

Once free of Imperial entanglements, they head to a Rebel outpost (the one with all the bunkers in the set photos and the lake in the trailer) for reinforcements in their mission to find Luke before the Imperials do. A squadron of X-Wings is dispatched to escort the Falcon on the mission. There will probably be some allusion to the past, like the son of Wedge will be a pilot, or they'll be called Rogue or Red Squadron still.

They head to the planet Boyega and Ridley think Luke is on, which is the snowy forest planet in he trailer where Darth Crossguard is waiting. I'm guessing that's a Sith acolyte or an Inquisitor, and given the rather large build and the medieval appearance of the lightsaber (harkening back to her blade on Game of Thrones), I'm willing to bet it's Gwendoline Christie's character. She chases the Rebels through the forest, with Ridley and Boyega (and possibly Han and Leia, but I doubt it) mounting a running defense, but she's stopped by another presence in the forest and ignites her lightsaber in response. We see a lightsaber battle between the two cloaked figures from a distance before Christie withdraws in defeat or is killed and the cloaked figure returns to his hideout.

Ridley and Boyega approach, and she enters the inner sanctum. Strangely, she sees the burnt out armor of her grandfather, Darth Vader there, and sensing a presence, turns to confront the man in the cloak, her uncle Luke. But he's a scarred and disfigured old man, half machine like his father, broken by time and by dabbling in the dark arts in order to try and find a way to prevent the reawakening of the dark side. She gasps in horror at his visage, and the film ends there with an ominous "To Be Continued," leaving us wondering if Luke is lightside or darkside or some combination of both.

The first part sounds like almost all the generic VII summaries posted so far. The second spoilered part sounds too outlandish.

Why do people assume Ridley's character is the primary character/force user-in-training and not Boyega's?

Also all leaked previous information along with the crossguard saber seems to agree that the Empire is still around and as strong as ever and that there is no successor state to the Rebel Alliance.

I actually kind of like the dewback being there in the Boyega scene in the Lucas version. If Lucas had really made the movie fanboys would be already giving him shit over the cutesy rolly droid.

I think just a voiceover to fade to black to the Falcon would have been a good teaser actually.

Oh yeah. The falcon going head to head with 20 tie fighters is good. Gives you a sense of danger.

and all 20 tie fighters still miss the target

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

I agree about the spoiler part being outlandish but it's based on a widely circulated rumor about Luke, not something I made up. It might not be what happens, and in fact I'd kind of prefer if it wasn't, but I'm just trying to piece things together.

As far as sounding like other speculative summaries, I haven't read any of them, but is that somehow surprising to you if the other ones were probably based on information about filmed footage that might end up in the trailer, and mine was based on filmed footage in the trailer, that they might draw similar conclusions?

Because she sort of looks like they could be going for a Jaina Solo vibe, and something seemingly gets Han and Leia to come out to Tatooine, where she is, which would make sense if she's their daughter. And in that rumor I mentioned she's the one seeking out Luke. And I think the Empire would be mindful of Force sensitives in their Stormtrooper ranks.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

There's been a lot of demand for a female lead in a Star Wars movie; Han and Leia's daughter Jaina Solo was one of the most popular characters in the old EU; Ahsoka Tano was very popular on The Clone Wars; and in the original cast photo, Ridley was seated between Ford and Fisher, while all the other new people were on the opposite side of the room, which to me implies she's Han and Leia's daughter and taking over as the central Skywalker of the trilogy.

Agreed. And I can't really blame JJ for wanting to withhold details about the story for as long as possible, considering how much stuff usually gets leaked or spoiled before a big movie comes out nowadays.

Hell, even with JJ in charge, I'm sure Disney will still spoil the hell out of this movie anyway in the countless ads and trailers and magazine stories released beforehand.

I'm just glad that for once a trailer to a future blockbuster doesn't have half the plot explained in barely two minutes. The complete mystery surrounding the images in this teaser have me more excited and intrigued than ever, and while there are fans who want more meat in their first trailers, sometimes you just have to snack on an appetizer to whet your palate while you wait for the main course to be served.

There's nothing wrong with some pretty tasty little breadsticks. Besides, it just makes the main dish all the more delicious.

what you don't know is that the moment after they snapped the photo, Ford and Fisher kicked her out of the chair and said "Get out of that chair! Go back to the other side of the room with the noobs!". typical JJ misdirection!

She could have simply been sitting next to Ford because they're the two main leads of the movie.

In fact given the rumors of where and how she lives (and what we see of her in the teaser), I'm thinking it pretty unlikely she would actually be the daughter of two leaders of the Rebel Alliance. Unless she had a major falling out with them and left home really early or something.

How far into The Force Awakens does Daisy Ridley's character Kira says "I have a bad feeling about this?"

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Why is it whenever a movie franchise goes on hiatus it comes back with delusions of grandeur?

    ;)

My local theater was one of the select few to get to screen the trailer before movies this weekend, saw it on the big-screen last night before "Horrible Bosses 2." (Actually not too bad of a movie considering it's a sequel in a Rated-R comedy franchise.)

Trailer looks.... interesting but obviously hard to really judge a fucking year away from the movie! But I really think J.J. Abrams's style will translate better to Star Wars than it did Star Trek.

I think the movie holds an ounce or two of "promise" and with little to go on with the trailer it looks like it *could* be good.
