Star Trek Generations at 20 (November 18, 1994)

FC did feel like abit of a big deal at the time. More so than GEN. Like this 'new' Trek had really 'arrived' and it was a whole new ball game and that old Trek was a thing of the past. I remember the only real criticism reviews at the time had was that there was too much Trek about on tv somewhat diluting the appeal of the big screen series.

Anyway all the effort goodwill etc that FC generated was undone couple years later Trek V style

First Contact is my least favorite of all the films. It has tonal problems, Frakes' direction was dull, and it was disposable.

I accept that mine is an outlier view. :)

I tend to agree, though Nemesis is my favorite of the TNG films. So what do I know?

I also agree and I think Nemesis is the best TNG movie too. First Contact is not the worst for me though. Insurrection is.

First Contact was mediocre, but that's just my opinion.

First Contact was entertaining for sure, but I just got the feeling they told the story to suit the modest budget, and it showed in places.

Man, I wish someone would just say Empire Strikes Back is the worst Star Wars film so I can finally just say:

"Now, I've heard everything."

Knowing the vast and complex diversity of Star Wars fandom around the world? There probably is somebody somewhere who thinks Empire is the weakest and worst film in the Saga. You can't get that many nerds and geeks to watch the same things and have all of them agree on much outside "what we watch is pretty cool."

And even then they'll fight and flame-war one another over just how cool a certain movie or episode really is.

Poor The Alternative Factor, it really did get screwed over. It could have been so much better.

Even though I think FC is mediocre, I conceed that it's the best TNG film.

For me:
1 - FC
2 - Gen
3 - INS
4 - Nem <- This and STID are 2 of my all time most hated films. Ever.

The thing I did like about Generations is that wasn't trying to be some big dumb action movie like later Trek films.

Post Generations, there's always been this Paradox with Trek movies. The studio wants to make them more action oriented to appeal to a wider audience, but at the same time they don't want to offend the established ST fanbase.

Rarely has this formula worked. FC and ST2009 did it the best, but they were still only mediocre.

I read a few fan fora in the late 90s and early 00s, and the attitude toward the Trek films seemed to be a little different.

It seems like the TNG films were generally regarded much higher than what I'm seeing here now.

Generations was seen as a great crossover and a fitting transition from TOS to TNG.

First Contact was, as I remember, the ultimate TNG action adventure film.

Insurrection wasn't as well received, but not slammed as much as it is now.

Nemesis seemed like a WTF moment among the fans.

Of the TOS films, it seemed like the favorites were TWOK, TVH, and TUC. The Motion Picture was about 50/50, as I remember, with TSFS coming in close behind TWOK as a favorite. TFF was generally spat upon, but I liked it then as I do now.

My aging brain could be deceiving me, but this is what I remember.

Is there someone who considers "Alternative Factor" the best TOS episode?

Not THE best no, but I'd put it in the top ten.

Seriously???

Ok, if you are being serious, could you elaborate?

I swear that I'm NOT being a smartass here. I'm genuinely interested in your thoughts on the episode and would love to look at the episode through a different lens.

Personally, I consider it the worst Trek episode. I can *kinda* see what they were going for, but IMO, it obviously didn't come together.

I'd love to hear a perspective that would change....well...my perspective.

My own personal and current ranking of the four Next Gen-era movies from most to least favorite:

1. First Contact
.
2. Generations
.
.
.
.
.
3. Insurrection
.
.
.
.
.
.
4. Nemesis

I haven't seen Insurrection since the theater in 1998, so I'd have to give it a rewatch to see how I feel about it over 15 years later, but for now.

First Contact

Generations

Nemesis
Insurrection

I rank Nemesis over Insurrection for the simple fact that Nemesis caught me up in the moment and I actually saw it a second time in the theater.

But that second viewing killed the film for me.

Oh, and since some of us are referencing the Abramsverse, I *loved* ST09 and STID.

Might be a different set of fans?

When I was a teenager Star Trek V definitely got the weakest reception of any of the Trek movies released before my adulthood. The first four were huge events accompanied by friends and family wanting to see them and they became big HBO, cable and later VHS/home video releases when their theatrical runs were over and done with. The Final Frontier kind of came and went with nowhere near as much excitement and TNG episodes on television seemed to get far more attention and generate more interest.
