Mudang Harada
Lieutenant Commander
I wonder how essential rewatching the series/movies is for most Treklit readers.
I stopped reading TOS books in the 80s, but still watch the series. Have never been interested in the 24th century enough to want to read about it, but still watch those series.
It was showing up on the main page. Just because I don't read the novels doesn't mean I don't sometimes take a look at the forum. The nature of your question would suggest you never expected an answer. No offense intended, purely out of curiosity: if you haven't read any Treklit in 30 years, how did you even find this thread?

I rewatch TOS, TNG & DS9 a fair bit, and to a lesser extent TAS & movies 1-8. I have the blurays for TOS, TNG & the movies as well as the DVD's for DS9 & TAS, so it's at my fingertips whenever I feel the urge to rewatch a good story or laugh at The Magicks of Megas-tu
There's a lot of good stuff there so I don't see why any trek reader wouldn't if they had the chance.

Myself I voted yes, though maybe for the wrong reason. I still watch the existing stuff regularly, but I've said for years now that if I had to choose between televised Prime Universe Trek coming back and Treklit continuing in its current form, I'd choose the latter no question. I'm more than happy with the current Abramsverse-movies/Prime Universe Treklit EU status quo, and I hope it continues for a while. (By far mostly for the latter of those two.)

There's so much stuff out there I haven't seen that I would rather watch that. It's the same with books - I think the only thing I've reread is Lord of the Rings, which might even get a third read before I die. I think I should probably reread Red Dragon too...

Do you have good memory? Or it just doesn't matter if some stuff gets forgotten with time?
My own memory is like a sieve. After re-watching the series so many times I remember the episodes now, but I'm currently re-reading most of my books, and in many cases it feels like reading for the first time. Some I forgot completely that I couldn't tell what they were about in general. And it's not that I had decades to forget; I started reading Treklit about 5-6 years ago.
It's not that often that a novel doesn't tell you what you need to know though...

True that, whether it's an episode or another novel.

Exactly. If I'm going to be picking up on something from, say, "Conscience of the King," I'll certainly going to take the time to remind the reader who Lenore Karidian is or whatever.
I'm not going to assume that every reader has an encyclopedic knowledge of every Trek movie and book.
(Ditto for most any other tie-in novel, btw.)
