Re: Anybody else stopped watching the series and keeps reading the boo

I stopped reading TOS books in the 80s, but still watch the series. Have never been interested in the 24th century enough to want to read about it, but still watch those series.

No offense intended, purely out of curiosity: if you haven't read any Treklit in 30 years, how did you even find this thread?

Myself I voted yes, though maybe for the wrong reason. I still watch the existing stuff regularly, but I've said for years now that if I had to choose between televised Prime Universe Trek coming back and Treklit continuing in its current form, I'd choose the latter no question. I'm more than happy with the current Abramsverse-movies/Prime Universe Treklit EU status quo, and I hope it continues for a while. (By far mostly for the latter of those two. :p)

It was showing up on the main page. Just because I don't read the novels doesn't mean I don't sometimes take a look at the forum. The nature of your question would suggest you never expected an answer.

Oh no, I did; I usually try to check back on threads I reply to wherever they are, and I guess I assume most folks do too. (I was also a little worried it would be taken as "you shouldn't be here", which completely wasn't my intention. I was just honestly surprised that someone not interested in Treklit would have seen a thread here.)

Where on the main page, though? I didn't realize there was somewhere that showed random threads like that, and I don't see it looking at the forum page.

Edit: Wait I'm dumb, you probably mean the "last post" column? I was thinking you meant there was a page somewhere that just shows random popular threads across the forums, since I've seen something like that on another forum I frequent.

Re: Anybody else stopped watching the series and keeps reading the boo

Yes, I meant that it was showing as most recent post at the time. By my time zone, the thread was created at 1:09am, and was on the front page for 30 minutes before I replied.

At least I think that's how I noticed it. I might have already been in the forum just skimming the topics.

Re: Anybody else stopped watching the series and keeps reading the boo

I avidly read the novels, but I've only watched each series once.

I will occasionally watch a rerun, particularly if it ties in with something I'm reading or was a personal favourite. I must have watched two or three episodes in the last year or so.

I tend not to watch anything more than once however.

Re: Anybody else stopped watching the series and keeps reading the boo

I rewatch TOS, TNG & DS9 a fair bit, and to a lesser extent TAS & movies 1-8. I have the blurays for TOS, TNG & the movies as well as the DVD's for DS9 & TAS, so it's at my fingertips whenever I feel the urge to rewatch a good story or laugh at The Magicks of Megas-tu

There's a lot of good stuff there so I don't see why any trek reader wouldn't if they had the chance.

There's so much stuff out there I haven't seen that I would rather watch that. It's the same with books - I think the only thing I've reread is Lord of the Rings, which might even get a third read before I die. I think I should probably reread Red Dragon too...

Re: Anybody else stopped watching the series and keeps reading the boo

I mix old and new books a lot, as I have a 2 hour train commute each weekday, so it's a rare book that I haven't finished reading in two days at the maximum - and even then that's only when I don't like the book enough to finish it in the evening. I'd love to have enough cash to buy 2-3 books a week though lol.

I don't watch much tv nowadays though. All the bbc comedies I used to love have dried up, to the point that all I'm watching now is doctor who and some American stuff - agents of shield, flash, constantine, sleepy hollow and blacklist. And I may drop blacklist. James Spader's magnificence can only get you so far when the scripts and the rest of the cast is rubbish. I do go to the cinema once a week though.

Re: Anybody else stopped watching the series and keeps reading the boo

I own all the Blu-Rays that have been released so far and I buy every book. I do rewatch series on a fairly regular basis and am currently in a rewatch of the Blu-Ray set of Enterprise. I'm actually enjoying the series much more than I did when it aired. I do love reading the books and have enjoyed almost all of the 24th century books released. I struggle with the TOS books though and I'm not exactly sure why. I own every one of them but of all the books released they are my least favorite reads with a few exceptions.

I agree. TrekLit right now is so exciting. They are willing to do so much more then they ever did on tv, characterwise and story wise.

Do you have good memory? Or it just doesn't matter if some stuff gets forgotten with time?
My own memory is like a sieve. After re-watching the series so many times I remember the episodes now, but I'm currently re-reading most of my books, and in many cases it feels like reading for the first time. Some I forgot completely that I couldn't tell what they were about in general. And it's not that I had decades to forget; I started reading Treklit about 5-6 years ago.

I'd say a slightly below average memory - I forget stuff all the time.

If I need to look something up, Memory Alpha/Beta, Wiki or this site helps. It's not that often that a novel doesn't tell you what you need to know though...

Re: Anybody else stopped watching the series and keeps reading the boo

I watch Voyager occasionally, but haven't seen the others in many years (I don't own any of the DVDs). As for books, I'm only into TOS and Voyager for the most part, but during the last couple of years I've read just two TOS novels - one for the first time and the other was a re-read. I'm into watching fan films and reading fanfic these days.

I'll go back to the novels some day, though. I'm just not in the mood for them lately.

Re: Anybody else stopped watching the series and keeps reading the boo

I pretty much limit my reading to novels set in the TOS and Enterprise time frame. I haven't done a complete rewatch of either series in years. Since they had the shortest runs it's easy to remember most of the details.;)

True that, whether it's an episode or another novel.

Exactly. If I'm going to be picking up on something from, say, "Conscience of the King," I'll certainly going to take the time to remind the reader who Lenore Karidian is or whatever.

I'm not going to assume that every reader has an encyclopedic knowledge of every Trek movie and book.

(Ditto for most any other tie-in novel, btw.)

Case in point, Una's Never Ending Sacrifice. Spun off from a character from a single episode. My recollections of the episode were slightly less than 'custody dispute over Cardassian child raised by Bajorans'.

I loved the novel, and although I would like to see the episode again, it wasn't necessary.

Re: Anybody else stopped watching the series and keeps reading the boo

I rewatch the TV shows and movies all the time and try to keep up with all the books - I try to watch something every day while exercising, though I will admit I am behind on the books and have a small stack sitting waiting for me. Now that winter is starting I'll be indoors so I'll be able to play catch up.
