Worst Overacting

A couple of romance subplots did not transform TOS into Soap Trek. Characters have romantic feelings, and after two seasons where the majority of romance subplots focused on Kirk (aside from McCoy in "The Man Trap" & Spock in "This Side of Paradise"), the TOS crew would seem underdeveloped if the series--by the 3rd season--did not explore that side with other characters.

Again, I see a quasi military crew not involved in any romantic storylines turning into a "we're so tense" series such as the aforementioned Voyage--and that leaves the characters cold and unappealing.

If the 4th season had come to fruition, TOS might have been the Love Boat in space.

Then you should have considered seasons 1 & 2 The Love Boat, since Kirk had a number of romances, along with the aforementioned Spock & McCoy love interests.

I think there were a few 'romances' (if you call what Riker was doing romance) in TNG. Was that a love boat too?
I think Picard, Troi, both Crushers also had a few romantic encounters. Even Data.

Romance is normal in ST--the crew are not a gang of celibates.

Especially Kirk, the leading scorer in Starfleet.

Kirk used his charisma like a weapon, romancing women to distract them if they were enemies, to get them on his side, to play for time, to confuse them, and so on. He didn't actually have that many serious romances. One wonders how a less charismatic captain handled the Sylvias, Kelindas, and Shahanas of the world. :)

Re: Risk -- That's Our Business!

I always thought that this speech felt overdone because of the director's choice to pull in for a really extreme close-up and not because of Shatner's performance.

My experience of Shatner's performances is that he gives reasonable performances when the scripts are good and only resorts to scenery-chewing when the scripts are bad. Shatner salvaged much of the third season with his over-the-top performances that added entertainment value to lackluster scripts. ;)
