TAS: Underrated Series

^Well, there was a time when, if you needed any kind of unusual vocal effect or animal sound, you called Frank Welker. In addition to his character roles, he's done innumerable animal noises in TV shows, movies, and commercials. These days, Dee Bradley Baker seems to have taken his place as the go-to animal-noises guy. There's a bit in I Know That Voice where Baker is doing some of his animal sounds on camera, and it's just so weird to see him doing it.
If you've ever seen the Dial M for Monkey segment "Quackor the Fowl" on Dexter's Laboratory, that's where Welker really takes everyone to school with his symphony of duck and monkey noises!

There's a Spanish-dubbed version on Dailymotion, but it's still almost all Welker after the 3-minute mark.

TAS successfully filled the continuity between TOS and TMP. It gave us the rest of the five year mission. :vulcan:

I wish that were so.

I enjoyed TAS, but it just didn't feel like the animated Season 4 and 5 that I was hoping for.

Give me livelier animation and I might be able to believe it.

I don't dislike TAS, but as I've already said several times, it IS a rough transition from TOS and I wish the transition were a little more seamless with energetic animation.

Shit, you know what would help that shouldn't be too difficult?

I can't believe nobody has suggested this yet (that I can remember):

Putting in the original scores!!!

Instead of the repetitive music from TAS, mix it up with some of the TOS themes!

I expect a "Thanks to EnriqueH" credit, you bastards!

I agree, but I actually like the 70's soundtrack. Nice to "hear" how Star Trek transitioned into the 1970's. To me. :)

I like the 70s music too, but they play the same themes OVER and OVER and OVER.

I think putting in the old themes would help alleviate some of the repetitiousness of the TAS scores.

Thanks, EnriqueH, you bastard!

That repetetive music, as I've noted, has a strange effect. If you think of one piece of the music, the rest follows unbidden. It's like some kind of post-hypnotic suggestion!

I love TAS music. Yeah, it gets a little repetitive, but I love it. I grew up with Ray Ellis's music from Filmation's shows, so it's always been a favorite. I dearly wish they could find the original music masters and release a box set of Ellis's Filmation scores, though I doubt there'd be too large a market for the ones beyond TAS and maybe Fat Albert.

There's definitely a 'period' thing going on with the TAS music, which does give it a strange appeal. Music seems to evoke time periods like no other medium quite can.

Along these lines, the TAS music at times is very evocative of the second season music of Space:1999.

TAS' music gets old FAST because they keep using the themes, so it doesn't lend itself to binge viewing.

Yes, moreso than TOS. There are pieces in TOS that are quite '60s sounding, but a lot of it seems timeless. TAS' music is very '70s.

The other thing is I can't imagine TAS' music layered into TOS' live-action.

Ah, but just imagine the music (probably all 15 minutes of it) on an old, self-repeating 8-track tape!

I'd probably come out of it like Simon Van Gelder....

LMFAOschwarz: Enrique, what's wrong? This music is awesome!

EnriqueH: You muuust open my minnnnnd. Let me show you and explain to you...

I can with this in context of retrospect.

Back when TAS premiered I think it was welcomed because it was new Trek when TOS reruns was all there was. And it had enough Trek DNA to make it feel mostly right. Also, at the time, it wasn't the usual Saturday morning kiddie fare. Despite missteps and limitations it generally aimed higher.

In retrospect it isn't all we could have hoped for, but then I'm also critiquing it with an adult perspective as opposed to that of a 14 year old. And since those days I've seen the art of storytelling in animation advance greatly.

Could TAS have been better? Yes, but like its live-action predecessor it was saddled with the realities of television production of the times. TAS would have benefitted from more time and money, but those things just weren't going to happen.

The other thing is I can't imagine TAS' music layered into TOS' live-action.

For what it's worth, some of it was recycled into later live-action shows from Filmation -- I think some of the cues are used in the first season of Jason of Star Command. And some of the cues used in TAS were, I believe, recycled from Lassie's Rescue Rangers, and a lot of LRR cues were reused in the live-action Shazam and Isis. So there's at least a bit of overlap there.

That's not the same as using it in TOS.

The best part of it is that we saw a wider variety of ships than live action would have given you--budget constraints and all.

I just mean it's been used in live action. I grew up listening to Filmation music, the same composer and sometimes the same cues in various animated and live-action shows, so the idea of the music crossing over from one thing to another doesn't seem strange to me.

It's a time-honored money-saving technique. The music in the Flash Gordon serials was made up of reused cues from various Universal pictures. The first appearance of the Clay People, for example, was set to music from The Bride of Frankenstein.

So my fondness for this series is based more on emotion than actual episodes. I, too, recently bought the cd collection. But it's really Alan dean fosters books plus some memories of seeing it as a kid that has instilled such fondness.

I also must confess that one of our brethren bbs members runs a website dedicated to TAS where, should you be so compelled , you can send in photos where he will create images of you in this TAS environment. This is the coolest thing on this planet! I did so, and snuck in my wife to boot, and I totally love the cartoon versions! Look, I was lucky enough to visit the TNg sets multiple times during its run ... But a TAS version of me? Sorry, egocentric moment here, it was sooooo coooool.

Ahem, I'm back. The actual episodes are almost unwatchable.
