Whats the best rock N roll era ever? Your favorite band from that era.

Re: Whats the best rock N roll era ever? Your favorite band from that

I say the 1970's to early 1980's : AC/DC, the Rolling Stones, Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd...

Re: Whats the best rock N roll era ever? Your favorite band from that

I got my first AM radio around 1962, when I was 11. So I was hearing James Darren, Del Shannon, Beach Boys, Elvis Presley, Duane Eddy, Bobby Darin, The Four Seasons, Neil Sedaka, Everly Brothers, Roy Orbison, Skeeter Davis, Booker T. & the MG's, Gene Pitney, Little Richard, Ray Charles, Peter, Paul & Mary, Shelley Fabares, Dion, Little Eva, The Tornadoes, and more on the Top 40 station. Then some guys called The Beatles showed up.

I'm not saying that was the best era, and I finally drifted away from rock 'n roll in the mid to late 80s.

If I had to narrow it down it would be a toss up between the 60s and the late 70s/80s. But then I would remember the cool songs I like from the 70s or the 90s.

Love the Beatles, the Who, U2 and Bruce Springsteen and a hundred other bands.

All these years and I still know every word to every song.

1980s.

Re: Whats the best rock N roll era ever? Your favorite band from that

Couldn't choose. It's all one era as far as I am concerned.

I used to differentiate between sub genres, but it's all just rock to me now. My top bands/singers would be Queen, Floyd, Iron Maiden, Bon Jovi, Chris Isaak, Jane's Addiction, Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam, Live & Muse, which covers the late 60s up to the earl noughties, and glam rock, metal, rock n' roll, hair rock, alt rock & "grunge" although I hate that word.

I listen to some new bands as well, but they haven't been around long enough to make my favourite bands lists.

I like 80s rock but also have a soft spot for late 60s-early 70s music. Love me some CCR and the Guess Who.

That's kind of me too. Love a lot of music from the 60's to the 80's for the most part, with some 90's stuff too.

That's about where I am. Any lines which might be drawn between this block of years and that one are pretty much arbitrary, and examples of great bands and great albums and great songs can be found in any and all of them.

I can't nail it down to one era, but if I were to do a Sam Beckett and travel around in my lifetime ...

60s: Beatles, Grass Roots, Hendrix, Cream
70s: ZZ Top, Pink Floyd, Eagles, Clapton
80s: Van Halen, SRV, Clapton
90s: Whitesnake, Clapton
00s: Clapton
10s: Clapton

Hmm. I think I'm starting to see a pattern here.

ETA: Check out The Empty Hearts, a new "supergroup" featuring Elliot Easton of The Cars, Clem Burke of Blondie, Wally Palmar of The Romantics, and Andy Babiuk of The Chesterfield Kings. Great stripped down rock n roll, and a lot of fun.

I totally love 80's music. I collect it, in fact. I don't really have favorite bands tied to specific eras, but I think the 80's will always be my favorite in 'general'.

Re: Whats the best rock N roll era ever? Your favorite band from that

I love music and artists from each era and decade, but if I had to choose just one and the greatest band or solo artist in it?

he 1960's.

The Beatles.

Because. ;)

Late 80s - Early 90s. A bunch of bands you never heard of.

The best Rock'n'Roll Era ever? The 20th Century. :D

Well, okay, the 50s through the early 80s. It's impossible to break it down more than that. The 50s had acts like Elvis and Chuck Berry, the 60s had The Who and the Stones, the 70s had Boston and Springsteen, the 80s had the Pretenders and Pat Benatar. Those are just examples, of course. But those were the best years; there's been kind of a lack of inspiration since then.

And today, Jack Bruce is dead.

There aren't many of the innovators of what we call rock n roll left.

Re: Whats the best rock N roll era ever? Your favorite band from that

^ Yep, Jack Bruce is a loss.

Every era has something great in it. Sometimes it's hard to find.

That said, my preference is late 60s to early 80s. Police, Rush, Hawkwind (underrated), Motorhead, Animal Logic, Asia, Bad Company, Box of Frogs, The Who, Kate Bush, Herb Alpert (actually a very cool guy), Led Zep, Aerosmith, Renaissance (one fo the great singers in Annie Haslam), Skyhooks (Aussie band), and that's barely scraping the surface.

I am disappointed all over again how few, if any, have mentioned DEEP PURPLE!. They are a great, great band. And I think 'Smoke on the Water' is one of their crappier songs. Dig up 'Burn' or 'Comin' Home' (off 'Come Taste The Band'). They released an album last year with some great tracks on it. They are, in effect, the Band With The Keyboard Player. Jon Lord was way above brilliant, and his successor Don AIry is pretty damn good too. If you want to hear a band in full flight, dig up 'Made In Japan', the original live double album. And of course 'Machine Head' is a Classic Album. Even their early Mark 1 stuff is pretty good in a Sixties way.

If you like your rock, hard, fast and intelligent, go find some. You won't regret it.
