Tomorrow : Yesterday and Today - The Star Trek Filming Locations

Well done, Botany Bay, you've done some really good work. The photos, then and now, have been great to see.

SORRY! Darn keyboard has a mind of it's own
Meant to say:

ST:V was shot in Trona, CA

You CAN edit a post, ya know. :)

PARTS of TFF were shot at Trona. Other locations included Owens Dry Lake and Yosemite.

Ooooh, sorry didn't know you could edit. (sigh).

This is the bbs version of tripping on your shoe laces and face planting in front of the entire school population.

Story of my life

Thanks for the info. There are a lot of people living around there now. You can see that from the comparison shots of Nona getting assaulted : look over her shoulder at how many more houses there are now compared to '67. I hope the area has been remediated properly. Scary stuff.

Don't want to derail the thread too much, but it makes sense that there's not been a lot of development in that area since the '60s. The notable exception is the affluent, gated Bell Canyon community (that might be what's visible in the recent version of the Nona shot), which was started in the late '60s about 1/2 mile due south of the SSFL. It's popular with horse enthusiasts and it's very secluded, but from what I can gather few know about the environmental concerns resulting from the SSFL, especially the impact on the ground water. Those that should know like real estate agents and property managers would probably not tell prospective buyers that multiple uncontained nuclear meltdowns resulting in radiation releases much worse than Three Mile Island occurred less than 1 mile from their multi-million dollar homes. The gates and signs probably have more to do with this than any privacy concerns.

I hadn't read up on this in a while, but the article does say the remediation is not expected to be completed until 2017, so as with any government effort expect it to take much longer than that. Of course remediation efforts (and the big fire a few years ago) tend to stir up and disperse the waste even more. Quite a mess really.

Thanks for the great feedback on the thread, guys.

I want this to be a handy resource for anyone thinking about doing this kind of thing - to help you decide how to plan your days and figuring out what's worth seeing and what's not.

So, from Will Rogers State Park, our next stop was the world famous Santa Monica Pier, not too far away from the park.

If you are a Voyager fan, you will want to check out one of the filming locations from the episode "Future's End I", and if you're not, the area around the pier has some nice shopping, cold beer, good food, and eye candy as far as they eye can see, male and female :)

To get to the "Future's End I" location, walk under the archway, then head down and to the left. There you will find the "Merry Go Round" where Janeway and co visited back in the 90's.

Next : Beverly Hills Kirok?!

One thing: this is the TOS forum. If you plan to do the other shows, maybe the this topic should be moved to General Trek?

No plans to do the others - I just threw in that one in because it's a short ride from Will Rogers, and you might as well do both at once.

Onwards now to Franklin Canyon Reservoir, the home of Miramanee and her asteriod endangered planet.

You are headed here :

This is quite an amazing drive. One minute you are in the city, then all of a sudden you hit the manicured laws and opulence of Beverly Hills, then you are in Franklin Canyon, which might as well be out in the remote countryside it is so serene.

I really enjoyed this place, and would recommend it for a walk around or a picnic. A real hidden gem.

Just a word about safety : despite you being not far from suburban Beverly Hills, you are a little isolated, and a (very stoned) local followed me around for 10 minutes warning me about bears in the area

Another point about this location : my driver said he's been up to this spot many times with fans of The Andy Griffith Show who wanted to check out where they filmed the opening titles :

Andy Griffith fans, I think this is your spot :

So where is that (in)famous obelisk that apparently blew the sets budget out of the water and is rumoured to have ended location filming for TOS?

I *think* it is where these guys are standing, it looks about right, and is the only area big enough to have housed it :

A bit of trivia I picked up as well - see the canoes?
The_Paradise_Syndrome_015.jpg

None of them are in the water because the park ranger pointed out that being a reservior no boating is allowed, but the canoes had already been hired and paid for. A livid Bob Justman demanded they be seen somehow (Bob did not like wasting money) : "We paid for 'em, now we're damn well gonna see 'em!". So they are being cleaned rather than rowed

More to come when I can.

If that story is true, it sounds like a major goof. You'd think someone on the production staff would have inquired whether boating was permitted there before filming the episode.

This continues to be a very interesting thread; I look forward to updates. Do you have any photos of the Obelisk area with the lake in the background like the screen cap?
