What you said just got me thinking. If it WASN'T a gimmick, why bring it up at this point at all? Especially since it's not even cast.

Why not just say they're doing a reboot and have yet to cast, could be all women, could be some women as the leads... the fact that they really seem to be stressing the only women leads is kind of interesting in itself, don't you think?

Especially if, as was said earlier, "The original movies were never so much about the men...". Then why do they seem to be making this literally all about the women?

Because it will be four women, and for some reason, there is a segment of the nerd population who freaks the hell out when women are announced as being leads in science fiction roles, especially well established sci-fi/fantasy roles that were previously inhabited by all men.

Whether people want it to or not, it becomes a sticking point for the more vocal hardliners.

Harold Ramis I'm pretty unfamiliar with, I didn't mind him, and he's sadly passed away, so enough about him.

Dan Ackroyd I never got the love for. Not exactly great, as evidenced by the vast majority of his movies, but probably not as bad as Chevy Chase.

Rick Moranis. Appalling, responsible for some of the worst crud comitted to celluloid. Should. Never. Be. Watched. Ever.

Bill Murray I like in Groundhog Day, Scrooged, Zombieland and some of the Wes Anderson movies, so I'll give him a pass.

I remember one great line in Ghostbusters, I think the only laugh I got from the movie - "Everything was fine until dickless here cut off the power grid!" "Is this true?" "Yes, your honor, this man has no dick."

Unfortunately, as the film's normally shown in the 'kiddie zone' on U.K. television, that line's invariably cut...

No need to explain or defend, the line I quoted was said by the judge in Timby's image up there in Ghostbusters 2, which leads up to the first big battle of the movie.

I will say, though, that every time I watch the first movie, I always catch a line, joke, or sight gag that I never noticed before.

    Won't only be mine.

Pandering to a female audience is what they are doing here.
And yes I do admit that every other film panders to a male audience. Was Bridesmaids made for a wide audience of men and women? Because it seemed to me just to be the female version of the Hangover and that is pandering to an audience who didn't like one product but would like it with a female cast.

Absolutely, it's one of the funniest movies of the past few years, as much a modern comedy classic as Mean Girls. The gender of the starring cast has nothing to do with whom it's targeting.

The Honey, I Shrunk movies would like to say hello. :p They weren't all that bad imo. Not award winning, but there are far worse films out there.

I'd (rather predictably) disagree about the 'Shrunk The' movies ! :)

I don't actually dislike Ghostbusters and will probably watch the new one. I may find it easier due to having less investment in the original.

Maybe I should give it a rewatch in the not too distant future...

I'm beginning to suspect you don't know what the word pandering means.

I don't know who you watch movies with, but personally speaking, I watched Bridesmaids and Mean Girls with a room full of men. For Bridesmaids, it was a guy's idea to rent it for a party.

But even if we're not counting anecdotes, if we're being empirical about it, those two movies killed it at the box office and are seen as landmarks. But it couldn't get to that point if men avoided the movies too, since men also make up a large portion of a paying audience, especially with blockbusters. Men helped make those movies, men helped critique it, men went to watch it, and men spoke positively of it through word-of-mouth. So no, gender is not and should not be a barrier to movies.

(and for the love of God, women watched the Hangover, too. And women, likewise, are major contributors and consumers. Replace "Bridesmaids" above with the Hangover and "men" with women, and it's the same result.)

For one, he seems to imply that "pandering" means a zero-sum game; if women gain something, men lose something (oddly, it's never said the other way around). And yet he brings up examples of "chick flicks" that were, contrary to his belief, enjoyed by audiences of more than one gender, with the profits and critical acclaim to prove it.

Dan Akroyd: Blues Brothers, Trading Places, Ghostbusters, is all I care about.

Rick Moranis was hilarious in his time with SCTV, preceding Strange Brew, Ghostbusters and Spaceballs. He just took a nosedive when he did Honey I shrunk the Kids. That's just bad decision making. He himself, is a very funny actor and skit comedian.

I never realized this before, but I also don't really care for any of Aykroyd's post-80s work. I mean there are movies he's in that I've enjoyed (My Girl, Evolution) but in those films he was either in a supporting role or very small role.

My enthusiasm for a new GB film was high in the mid to late 90s when it was heavily rumored. But if I recall correctly, Sony wasn't interested in doing anything with the IP. I blame them for waiting this long to try and get another film in theaters.

Now with this "reboot" or whatever they're calling it, I think it could be interesting, but Paul Feig and the writer of The Heat? No thank you, that movie was horrible.

Of course not. There's a lot of insecurity out there when it comes to capable women having lead roles in sci-fi/fantasy franchises.

There's nothing wrong with a female led sci-fi/fantasy movie. Actresses like Cate Blanchett, Scarlett Jo, Charlize Theron, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Helen Mirren, Jodie Foster, Michelle Pfeiffer, I buy all day. There's a ton of awesome leading ladies.

The problem with this concept, is that they will probably be getting Melissa McCarthy, Maya Rudolph, Kristen Wiig in it because they are the face of the current affirmative action female comedy trend Hollywood is trying to jam down our throats.

Even with that sketch comedy show, I can't remember the name of her. But it's some blonde woman, who tries to be funny with vulgarity and making herself sound like a slut. I'm sorry but she's not funny(unless I was 15 maybe), there's much better out there, unless you are saying that is the best women have to offer to compare to a Dave Chappelle.

Tina Fey, Garafolo, Silverman, Betty White, Poehler, those women are funny and have a strong range. This new crop reminds me of the crap movies the Wayans churned out. And because they are women, we're supposed to buy it, because that's the gimmick.

So you've judged it before it's even started casting and production. That can only end well.

Agreed. Saul does pick some odd examples. Maybe if he had suggested 27 Dresses or something. But broadly successful comedies with female leads? Um, doesn't that show there's broad appeal across gender lines?

This. It's not like this new Ghostbusters they are going to stand around and talk about their vaginas. Why are sci fi fans so afraid of women?

    Oh. Wait. Nevermind.
