The Lonely Thief

RoJoHen

He's just looking for love!!!

So I went in to my checking account today and found that somebody had stolen my debit card info. 8 fraudulent charges, all to dating sites.

The card has been canceled and the charges reversed, but what a silly thing to wake up to.

You can't find your soulmate with someone else's money.

Heh, that happened to me with a couple credit cards. Talk about looking for par'Mach in all the wrong places.

In all seriousness, it's unlikely the thief used it personally. They probably sold it on a black market site and then someone else used it. Dating sites are a popular venue for stolen debit/credit cards, for some reason.

The card itself is still in my wallet, which I think it the most impressive part of the crime.

The last time my debit card info was stolen, the bank called me to ask if while I was at the movies, I was also in [another state] buying six dollars in shitty jewelry from a mall boutique.

My thief tried to order pizza, so maybe you can. ;)

This has happen to my wife twice, both times because of taking money out of a ATM. They use slim card readers and either cameras or touch pads to get your Pin. I won't even count the time when a car wash attendant stole the Speed Pass thingy from her key ring.

RoJoHen, I'm sorry it happened but very glad the bank was so cooperative.

If it was easy, it couldn't have been TCF bank.

About 15 years ago, there was some store in Russia (an actual physical store) where my debit card was supposedly used.

TCF was complete shit for getting it reversed. They were happy to take the word of this store over mine.

They had a credit card slip from a manual credit card imprinter machine, but the digits were all evenly spaced, not in groups of four like on the actual card and I had to point this obvious fact out to the bank.

I closed that account right after the credit was finally made. I've been with Bank One/Chase ever since.

The bank is prosecuting a neighbor who stole my debit card information. He used it to pay for Netflix and several social media games. The idiot used his own name on the Netflix account, so it is an open-and-shut case. He's a 21 year old man, not just some teenager.

Doesn't matter. If you ever used it online or had it swiped anywhere, it is trivial to steal.
Well, sure, trivial for some. I don't know the first thing about stealing things. :p

It took all of 10 minutes to fix the problem, and most of those minutes were from the bank putting me on hold.

There are also other methods. I heard about this one a few weeks ago. Thermal imaging pictures. The hottest button is obviously the last key pushed, the coldest one (that still has heat on it, mind you) is the first one pushed, and after that, if you got a four-digit number, it's a piece of cake with two numbers to solve.

I have a feeling RedBox was the culprit in my debit card theft. Being a bartender, I tend to have cash on me, so I almost never pay for things with cards. The only thing I ever use my debit card for is when I put gas in my car.

Last week, however, I went to RedBox twice because I had some extra time off from work and rented some movies.

It's trivial for those who are into doing such things. ;)

Tom is right, people even attach devices to ATMs and some of them are small enough you may not even notice it's there. Then there are things like the Target leak, where if you used a debit/credit card at a Target store, it could have been stolen and then used online.

Gaaah! :scream:

Otoh, he doesn't sound terribly bright, I'm glad it was relatively easy to resolve.
