What Is Star Trek Really About?

Star Trek is typically about 52 minutes long. ;)

Actually, most TOS episodes are around 50 minutes, with regular episodes of the other series shorter. I think TNG was around 47 minutes or so when it started and Enterprise was 43 or 44 when it finished.

What's it about?
To whom?
The owners? Making money.
The fans? About as many answers as there are fans.
To me? Kirk, Spock, and McCoy.

Roddenberry's original idea was get a successful series on the air, after his show The Lieutenant went off the air with just one season. By putting this new series into a science fiction format, he thought it might be easier to disguise certain themes and issues dealing with modern society and get it past the censors. But above all else, he was just trying to get a successful show for the money and prestige. As Majel once said, the format didn't really matter, he just wanted a successful show for his ideas.

I don't have a ready answer for this question. Except, perhaps, "versatility." That's what I think it's about. Its the one constant between GR, the Networks, the Studios, the merchandising and the fans. The product itself, the show, works as live action, cartoons, fan films, whatever. It's been everything but a musical, so far, and I'm convinced one day it will try that, in some way. But its versatility has been how it's found longevity and how it's gotten its stories out and messages of hope and inspiration over yay, these many decades. I don't know that it was made with "versatility" in mind, but it made STAR TREK accessible and available to Generations of people on the entire planet.

"April 13th... point two. We have failed to uphold Brannigan's Law. However, I did make it with a hot alien babe. And in the end, is that not what man has dreamt of since first he looked up at the stars?" - Zapp Brannigan

What does Woody Allen have to do with Star Trek?

You're being facetious ya?
He's making a joke using the Yiddish term "mensch" as opposed to the German word "mensch".

I don't see how Star Trek is about the "Übermensch".

Listen to Gene Roddenberry talk about his vision of the future, and humanity, and then read Thus Spoke Zarathustra. From the Augments, to Federation ideals. The Trek universe is littered with references.

For me, it has always been about hope. Even right now, in 2014, despite a few thousand years of scientific and cultural advances, life on earth is still shit for most people. There are still wars and disease and crime, mostly due to greed and ignorance.

Star Trek shows us a future where we finally got past all of that, and that is the place I want to be, and even though I won't see it personally, I need to believe that it can happen someday.

Not seeing it. The Augments are bad guys. The Federation's "ideals" are mutable and somewhat generically "good". GR was mostly believing his own hype.
