What Is Star Trek Really About?

Taylirious

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
Mindless entertainment? Space exploration; seeking out new life & new civilizations? Foretelling future technology? Possibility? Exploring humanity in a futuristic setting? or Exploring humanity?

I am confused.

A little from column A and a little from column B...

Mostly exploring what it means to be human, while exploring space and so on.

Thought provoking morality plays at its best, solid SciFi when its mediocre.

What the writers of the shows say is so special about Star Trek: Its a superset - you can pretty much write with every episode a new story in another genre for "Star Trek", while most other shows pretty much repeat a formular in variations every episode.

I personally think, its a very interesting mix: Showing the evolution of the culture of empathy (beginning with Sokrates and Kant) by easy to understand/follow stories to teach the values of empathy like the old fairy tale morality plays of Grimm do for kids, set in the future to disconnect the content from contemporary cultures, mixing international cultures, using a modern form of story telling. The meta structure of "Star Trek" spans from the past into the future to reflect about today on a global scale.

The world you live in is shit. One day though, many of the things that make it shit will be gone, and it will be less shit. It won't be perfect - there'll be things that make it a bit shit in it's own way - but at least it'll be better.

No you're not. You got it.:bolian:

Star Trek,

- Sometimes deep. Difficult moral choices and complex timetravel paradoxes.
- Sometimes mindnumbingly fluffy soap opera. Learn all about Troi and Lt. Reeds favorite dish, and Kirks 78th long lost love.

All of the above.
