Nope, usually I just take the week off and take it easy at home, get caught up on projects/reading/sleep.

That's what is nicknamed here as going on a vacation on Balconia or Gardenia :D My favourite holiday destination is Bedstead, though ;)

Good idea. However, I'd strongly advise not to go on a road trip in Germany. The state of our roads is indiscribable (since to my knowledge no language has yet been invented that would have the appropriate vocabulary to describe a typical German road or sidestreet). We held a nationwide pothole-contest last year (no kidding, sadly, only a display of our trademark gallows humour).

I bet the UK roads are worse for pot holes.

Not those in the greater London area, Cardiff and surroundings or Leicester. As for the rest of the country I lack experience (but I'm planning to mend that as soon as my bank account permits it).

What do you think about an international pothole contest? We could do that like the avatar game. People have a week time to enter a pic of their favourite pothole and then we vote on them. How's that? (and since there are new potholes every day, we could even do a "pothole of the month" contest if the first thread proves popular)

Boston would definitely be a contender. Our streets look like the surface of the Moon.

Our council sends 3 men with a truck a barrel and some shovels to try and patch them up, but I think the stuff in the barrel is different to the road surface so it does not last long.

15-year-old car, makes any road trips in it ever again unlikely.

I've worked for the US government for almost 20 years, so I accrue one day of vacation (8 hours) every pay period (that is every two weeks). I can use my annual leave in advance, as long as I don't quit my job before I earn it back. The down side is that I can only carry 240 hours (6 weeks) over from one calendar year to the next. Since I rarely take vacations, I usually end up donating 40 or so hours to the leave bank, for people who are out long-term but do not have sick leave ( which is accrued separately) to cover it.

^^ That's a good carryover. I can only carry over two weeks, with no option to cash out (like I did with my last job).

It sounds like your plan is virtually identical to mine. The only difference is I've worked for four months as opposed to 20 years, so I get a crappier version ;)

At my office we may carry over only +100 hours and we must at no time during the year get beyond -20.
We may take off a maximum of 24 days a year to reduce the surplus hours.

Heh. I can only carry over 40 hours. Though granted that hasn't been an issue for the past couple of years.

I used to get 5 weeks paid when I was permanent.

    Now I'm contract I don't get any.

On the other hand, I do get paid 5 times what I used to so it's all swings and roundabouts.....

I thinks it's 4 weeks. I currently have a little over 6 weeks up my sleeve, and will take one of them in October.
