Autumn 2014 challenge: Desperation

Your challenge is to write about a desperate situation, whatever that may be. Civilian, Starfleet, military, criminal? Serious or amusing? Major or minor? Happy ending? Sad one? Puzzling one? Your choice.

And now, The Rules:

• Word limit: 10,000 words max, with a little wiggle room above if needed.
• Story must be original for this month’s challenge, nothing posted here before please.
• Let’s keep the challenge in the Trek arena, canon or your personal fic.
• No crossovers, please.
• Only complete stories will be eligible; finishing the story before posting it is a good idea.
• Post a link to your entry in this thread when you’re done.
• Contest to run until 11:59 PM (US Eastern Standard Time) October 27th, with voting to follow from October 28th to October 31st.

I've always wanted to write a Trek story. I've dabbled with different ideas over the years.

I used to be a newspaper journalist, so I need to get back into writing anyway. Even if it's just for myself...

BTW I wrote a story (I think it's a few years old by now) with this very title, and it was about mixed parents - he was human, she was alien - trying to toilet train their four-year-old hybrid daughter.

I've made an entry called The Road To War based upon the outbreak of the Four Years War between the Federation and the Klingon Empire in the late 2240s.

It looks at the desperate tactics an under-manned destroyer and out-of-its-depth tug use to engage a Klingon fleet heading for an unarmed colony and station along the border.

Hi

I wrote a fanfic a few months ago, about Ensign Vorik which could fit under the 'desperation' theme.

It is my first ever fanfic, and I know its not very good in terms of writing, but hopefully has a few plot twists. And if I don't write how could I improve?

Two things; firstly it is rated M and suggested for only those aged 18 and above, secondly I posted it on fanfic a few months ago and didn't write it specifically for the competition, is that allowed in the rules?

I've noticed other people have uploaded the stories. How do I do that? I'm new here.

Hm mm...so the "or your personal fic" reference mean non-trek fic is ok?

Personal fic as in OCs but within the Star Trek universe (I'm sorry if that's unclear). Trek stories. Not Doctor Who, etc., but the characters need not be canon.

While your rules only say that the story must not have been posted here if taken literally, usually it was my understanding that the stories submitted shouldn't have been published elsewhere already. But if you want to open the competition up that's your choice.

This board is supposed to be PG-like. I haven't read the story in question, yet, so I can't say if it's suitable. Swearing is okay but explicit sex scenes aren't.

I took a look on ff.net and did see (what I feel is) explicit stuff in that fic. So, here's what I'd like to do -
1) No explicit stuff (board rules) and
2) Nothing posted before, even outside the site. Let's keep this as new fic. But, if Bry gets no competition at all by October 15th, open it up to stuff posted off the site, long as it hasn't been on the Trek BBS before then.

I take it that'll work for all.
