Shazam movie coming, Dwayne Johnson confirmed as Black Adam

I'm only really familiar with the character from JLU, but if he's written anything like that then this could be a really cool movie.

Just a shame they'll probably continue calling him Shazam though, instead of the much better Captain Marvel.

Have they ever considered renaming him Captain Thunder? I believe that was supposed to have been his original name when he was first created.

How would other people even known to call him Shazam if he can't say it himself?

Cool. I've been curious to see what all of his teasing was going to end up being about.
My only familiarity with Shazam comes from the animation and video but I liked what I saw there so I'm very interested in this.
I wonder who they'll get for Shazam and Billy Batson?

Well, Captain Marvel is my favorite DC hero, but DC has done nothing but ruin him since the DC reboot. Besides the stupid name change, I'm sure the movie will keep Billy Batson as a whiny, mean spirited teen who is more self centered then your average supervillain. That's the current DC Shazam, he's almost completely the polar opposite of the real Captain Marvel, the only similarity is that Shazam isn't an outright villain (yet).

They'll almost certainly be using the current (and worst) version of the character as a basis for the movie, so unfortunately I can't get excited by my favorite hero getting a movie, because he really isn't. The a-hole Shazam is getting a movie, not the awesome Captain Marvel.

Now, some should say that I should wait and see. I'd agree, and that's an attitude I try to have nowadays (even about stuff like Batman v Superman) except that DC only does grim and gritty movies nowadays, so even if Shazam isn't done by Snyder, or set in the JL universe, there is a god chance that they're going to have it be as Nolan-like as possible, like every DC movie nowadays. The Nolan/Goyer/Snyder way would be to have a a-hole teen get great power and probably do something horrible before learning a lesson, instead of having an orphan with a kind personality getting the power to save people. We'll be lucky if he doesn't end the movie by ripping Black Adam's head off to use as a basketball. :(

That said, The Rock seems like a cool choice for Black Adam, so that should be interesting to see. At least I'll have someone to cheer for in the movie. Maybe I'll be wrong, and they'll do the Earth's Mightiest Mortal justice, but DC's track record with movies makes that seem like a fairly remote possibility, even without the influence of the current comic version of Shazam on the movie.

^ Shazam will have a sense of fun. So no "grim" and "gritty".

I'll believe it when I see it. They have no reason to do it. They even make characters like Superman grim and gritty now, so I don't see "Shazam" being anything like Captain Marvel. Add to that having the movie be written by the guy who wrote the mediocre Jack the Giant Slayer and Turbo, and I don't see anything to be happy about. I mean, I liked Shrek 4 ok, but it was far from a masterpiece. This just seems like the normal BS they spout to give lip service to the few hardcore fans that care, probably just to keep the copany public email inboxes unclogged for a few months longer then if they told the truth immediately.

Also, its funny that you show a pic from the DC Animated movie that got Shazam almost as wrong as the current comics do right after the link. If people want to see the real Captain Marvel, the Justice League Unlimited Episode "Clash" gets him perfectly. The movie that pic comes from, Justice League: War (besides just being a bad story adapted poorly) basically just takes the bad comic Shazam and tones him down slightly. He's still bad, but slightly less of a jerk.

i don't care for the rebooted version of Captain Marvel either. he's too much a jerk kid. the Ordway run is still the best version of the character IMO.

I totally agree. The Power of Shazam was a great series, and it showed a Billy Batson who was more complex than the older versions, but who was still a good kid. It also did his supporting cast and villains perfectly.

Why do they have no reason to make a fun and upbeat film? Snyder, Goyer and Nolan have nothing to do with how Shazam or Aquaman will play out in their solo films. WW doesn't have writers yet, and Snyder is attached to BvS, JL and another MOS movie. There's nothing stopping different writers and directors from handling other characters differently. It makes sense tone wise, since Shazam comics have been on the lighter side of the DCu. Not counting those horrible comics stories at the tale end of JSA before the New52 reboot.

Also what's grim and gritty about Superman now? You make it sound like he's rubbing shoulders with actual grim-dark stories like V for Vendetta, Watchmen, 1984 TMNT and Burton-Nolan-Miller versions of Batman.
