Doctor Who's Frazer Hines has reportedly been cast in Starz series Outlander.

The actor - who played Jamie McCrimmon, a companion of the Second Doctor (Patrick Troughton), on the BBC sci-fi show - will portray Sir Fletcher Gordon, the governor of Wentworth Prison.

Outlander author Diana Gabaldon announced Hines's casting at the Edinburgh International Book Festival, reports.

"He is a lovely guy and I am really pleased," she added.

Gabaldon also revealed that Hines's Doctor Who character partly inspired her novels, after she first saw him in a kilt as Jamie McCrimmon.

Explains the tweet a month ago. :)

You mean The Macra Terror or Power of the Daleks hasn't been found? The Christmas special won't be about the Doctor reuniting with an older Jamie?

*Has a fit of rage, throws objects at the wall and yells profanities in seven different languages, nine if you count Klingon and Judoon.*

Awesome. While watching the first two episodes last night, I found myself thinking Frazer Hines should show up. :D

Ah, so it isn't a coincidence that one of the main characters' name is Jamie Fraser. I wondered about that. :D

Not exactly revealed; she mentioned that in the intro to one of the novels way back in the 1990s!

Couldn't have happened to a nicer fella. I met him at a Doctor Who convention a decade ago and he's one of the most upbeat, down to earth, friendliest celebrities you could ever meet. Deserves a bit of luck after the rough last few years he's been through.

If he's back in the game, I imagine one thing will lead to another and he'll return playing an older Jamie before Capaldi's done. Probably a Laird by now.

I think that's really cool that he helps inspire the name of a character in a book and then ends up cast in the TV adaptation.

Am I right in thinking he's been ill?

Because I wasn'ty alive when he was Jamie, for many years to me Hines was mostly wedged in my conciousness as Joe Sugden in Emmerdale Farm (where he married Jenna from Blakes 7) but once I finally saw him in action as Jamie he's become one of my favourite companions (The Second Doctor, Jamie and Zoe is a great Tardis crew).

Glad he's back in the acting game...shame it wasn't an appearance in Who though!

Frazer will appear in Ep15 apparently.
Damn, that far away? Hopefully it'll be more than one episode.

I'm surprised no one talks about Jamie's reunion with the FOURTH Doctor in an upcoming Fourth Doctor audio story.
Well, considering it was only just announced last week and the story in question doesn't come out for another year, there isn't much to talk about. Even the folks over at GallifreyBase haven't said much beyond "Is this really necessary?" Hell, they've talked more about the surprising return of Peter Hayden, despite dying at the end of Tomb of the Cybermen, episode one.
