The Return of MSPaint...

And another WIP concept for your consideration, since I don't have any Legacy updates yet...

Added the random Sovereign dorsal view to give it a sense of scale. I'm envisioning this as a successor to the Defiant-class integrated-hull design philosophy (though not to the Defiant, herself). Much larger of course, and you'll probably notice the Ferengi (shocking, I know) and Tholian influences. My friend needled me about it looking like the clamship from Flight of the Navigator. I asked him what was wrong with that? :p
Still very rough, but I'm really enjoying the ventral hull design process...can't wait to show off the deflector concepts I've been toying with.

Quick update, with one version of the dorsal view...

And a quick, rough (i.e., terrible) sketch of how I'm imagining the deflector.
Sort of inspired by the jet engine intake of the F16 fighter, crossed with a Valkyrie intake, and the mouth of a whale shark.

That would make for a great aft deflector fantail cut out as well, in cas you want a refit secondary hull to have an aft Dreadnaught dish, but keeping the fluid styling.

You mean replacing the existing ventral shuttlebay configuration (mirroring the dorsal sublight engines) with a similar circular "cut" into the hull housing the shuttle/cargo bays? If so, I like that suggestion. Didn't even think of making the hull feature balanced fore and aft.

Small update, with a slapdash VFX test. Took your advice on the aft ventral hull configuration, publiusr...if that's what you were talking about.

I'm loving the way you made a hull cutout for the main deflector. It looks so exotic and futuristic-like, and also fluidic in a sleek way.

To me, it seems to draw a little from how you make the hull cutout for your Legacy.

Re: The Return of MSPaint...IN 3D!

JD, a coworker of mine on Star Trek: Excalibur decided he wanted to try his hand at modeling a non-canon starship...lucky for me, he picked the Legacy.

Stand by for WIP images...

*UPDATE*

Thanks, Kaiser. Good to be back.

Here's a small update and refinement of the aft/dorsal section. I do believe JD has scaled down the nacelles a bit.

How the bridge spur morphs into the shuttle bay with the secondary hull top being a landing platform itself is just Golden. Flow is really important--one of the best.

I'm fond of it, too. JD's done a fantastic job of translating the 2D design to three dimensions. Some problems that just didn't work themselves out in my head are solved with this model.

I always seem to wander down the same old, dusty street every few years...

A new concept.

I'm posting this early version mainly because I'm a bit paranoid I've seen something like this before and am unconsciously duplicating it. True, there's nothing new under the sun, but there's also such a thing as artistic courtesy.

Does this concept overwhelmingly resemble any popular existing designs?

Looks distinct to me.

Cool! I'll just continue working on it, then. And even if I'm riffing off of predecessors, this should still manifest enough originality to be artistically valid...at least, as valid as these things ever get. :D

Small update:

(Any thoughts on the bussard collectors?)

Well, if you rotate it and stand it on its nacelles, it does evoke the 1950s-era rocketships like the one in Destination Moon. Perhaps that is what is pinging on your consciousness?

Like it BTW.
