Robin Williams dead at the age of 63

Indeed. The following is a beautiful video of Robin Williams interacting with Koko the Gorilla, who understands thousands of English words and communicates in American Sign Language.
Beautiful indeed. I hope Koko never knows that she lost another friend.

Just imagine if two people, one who follows either site, were to meet.
Mutual annihilation, one hopes.

She does know. Her caregivers told her. :(

Slightly off topic.

But I heard of Koko for the first time in this thread.
While I was aware of apes of high intelligence koko beats all expectations.

While watching this is is hard NOT to see her as any other person.
She has a clear grasp of social conventions, humor and grief, sophisticated language skills, concept of herself and distinct identities of other people, abstract thinking and life and death.

How can ANYBODY classify these creatures as "just an animal" any longer?

^^ That's a wonderful video and a nice message from Buzz Aldrin.

Animal intelligence is a fascinating area of research. Not only some primates and some cetaceans, but even some species of birds show signs of self-awareness and abstract thought, and the ability to use language. Elephants as well.

Adam Hills is awesome. This.

His answer to the Westboro Baptist Church's threat to picket the funeral:

CAN WE GET A KICKSTARTER GOING FOR THIS?!

I watched "Popeye" this afternoon, a movie I literally haven't seen in 30 years or so. And I came out actually liking it.

It's not a "good" movie, for sure. It's a terrible "musical" as the musical numbers in it are horrible but it's actually a pretty good adaptation of the source material overall and I think Williams does a good job as Popeye and Duvall as Olive Oyl. Fun little movie. :)

It would have been better as a straight-up comedy, but as bad as it was I thought it was pretty good. Williams really brought Popeye to life, and Shelley Duvall as Olive was brilliant casting.

Oh to get my hands on a time machine--to be able to break into his home after he cut his wrists--to pull him free of that belt.

Robin is the only man I ever wanted to touch.

He always looked like he could have used a hug

Yes, definitely. Very sweet of her.

And just noticed Ramdom_Spock had already posted it. Sorry about that. Didn't recognize the link.

Yeah, I noticed that she said she no longer does acting, but I wonder if she would have reconsidered for the Mrs Doubtfire sequel that was being planned, since she had such a great experience with him. Of course, I think it's better, for everyone involved, that it won't be happening. Knowing that he dislikes sequels, I don't think his heart would have been in it. But it's great to hear from someone who's had time with him at such an impressionable age. I have to say, she's very well-spoken.
