Is TrekBBS the last of the great scifi message boards?

This is the only message board I ever visit now. If I am looking for generic discussion on SF&F, I will visit Reddit.

Gallifrey Base is still the bustling hub of Doctor Who fandom.

I am often amused at the parallel discussion on here and Gallifrey Base. The old 'the classic stuff was better!" and My Doctor (Captain) is better than yours!' not to mention the 50th anniversary discussions.

This has always been the only board I've ever been a part of. Going on 16 years...good grief.

or descended into a pit of over-moderated death-by-enormous-image-signatures.

Thank god TrekBBS disables those. They are atrocious. I remember when I was young and dumb in the late 90s early 2000s, and I went to sites that had image signatures, I thought it was the coolest thing! I made gaudy and awful image signatures that I'm glad don't exist anywhere, so I don't have to be embarrassed by them. They are the mullets of the internet.

This and Gallifrey Base. I've been spending more time there over the last few years, but the 50th anniversary, Star Trek Beyond, the new series, the continuing book sagas, and the wonderful fustercluck that is Axanar have been bringing me back here again.

Ahh a newbie.

Times change. Before trekbbs I used to hang out on uk.media.tv.sf.startrek. It still exists, just very few posts and logs of spam. Most ISPs dont offer a Usenet account anymore.

The fist web based discussion boards were usually Usenet style and thread based, rather than a single list of posts. Mailing lists still keep this format, but there's few purely web based threaded systems out there (slashdot of course being one)

Boards will stay running as long as people are there to pair on them. Trekbbs survived the lean years post enterprise, with just two films in the last 10 years, (and of course a massive host of books). With trek 17 coming on I don't see trekbbs shutting down for a long time.

I have been around long enough to see people banned for using their real names and pictures and that is the change. The need to say this is me and my 10 seconds of fame is why the younger generation of fans have moved away from message boards and those who saw TOS or even TAS first run like me are falling in their race with father time

Really? I joined just over a year after you, and I've used my real name the entire time. Plus there's been the occasional "show us the real you in your avatar" thing now and then.

It could also be that some people have felt they have said everything they needed to say on the subject and find they are just repeating themselves. That happened to me in the Tolkien fandom. It was fun but I don't know how many times I could keep debating certain topics over and over.

Are there are good boards to talk about sci fi news or just tvs and movies. With Facebook it seems like this system of social media is dying but this fosters better conversation than Facebook ever could. I have been thinking about joining the ign boards buy that is more video game based.

Indeed, stardream. After posting to The Fourth Turning forum for 15 years, I finally ran out of new things to say. And I started to ask myself, didn't I already post this comment a few times before? It gets tedious to keep repeating the same stuff, and it is tedious to read the same comments that someone else keeps repeating.

I still occasionally make a quick comment, in response to current events.

One very intelligent and very erudite person I know gave up posting altogether.

Regarding star wolf's comments.... I starting watching TOS back in 1966. Half a century later, I am not a spring chicken anymore. And of course, it is sad to see the cast disappear.

This is a blog, not a forum board but it's my go to place for the latest sci fi news (and real science as well). They have a pretty active bunch of readers who love to leave comments. Don't know if that's what you are looking for or not.
