Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist

There is a new show on NBC that premiered last night called "Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist". It's about a young woman called Zoey who gets the ability to hear people's inner most thoughts in the form of musical numbers. It has a good cast (Jane Levy, Skyler Astin, Lauren Graham, Peter Gallagher, Mary Steenburgen). The characters are really likeable. Zoey played by Jane Levy is really adorable. It has some really tender moments. But the highlight of the show for me are the musical numbers. They are really fun to watch.

It plays on NBC on Sundays at 9pm.

My teenage daughter really likes it.

It kind of reminds me of Glee, but with musical dances that "make sense".

Peter Gallagher doesn't seem to have a great voice, but is really good in his role.

I can see that. Whereas Glee could have the characters be rehearsing whatever cool song the writers wanted to do, this show actually has an in-universe explanation for why they are using that song.

Peter Gallagher doesn't seem to have a great voice, but is really good in his role.

I do think it's pretty clever how the show has used Zoey's gift to give the actor something to do. Otherwise, it would seem like a pretty boring role to just sit there in a catatonic state the whole time. But Zoey's gift gives the writers a perfect excuse to have the actor move around and do stuff.

I think the closer comp is Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. In that show the main character saw the world as a Broadway musical. But the show’s main premise was pretty heavy in that it eventually dealt with mental illness.

IMO, Crazy Ex was brilliant. All of the songs in each episode were originals written for the episode in which they appear.

I do intend to check this show out.

Last night's episode established that Zoey's power is not random. She is getting songs for a specific person that she is meant to help, as if someone or something is deliberately pointing her to a person that needs help.

In this ep, it was her boss that she was supposed to help and she actually continued to hear the same song everywhere she went until she acknowledged that she was not done helping her boss. I loved the ending with the Katy Perry song "roar". It was great to see her boss be free from the terrible marriage that she was stuck in.

The subplot with Zoey's dad is very moving. The show definitely has heart. I was moved when the dad typed out the message "You're amazing. Let them help" to let his wife know that it's ok to let the kids help him more". Very touching.

yeah, i too have been digging those relationship building aspects.

The baby reveal ending was very sweet... and glad they showed a way Peter Gallagher can actually talk on the show in a real way.

I am waiting for the Zoey parody where she hear's the thoughts on Joe Biden SUpporters on what they think Bernie Sanders supporters are thinking = Blackbear's "Hot Girl Bummer"

I loved last night episode. They used good songs and used them effectively.

I think Max is definitely the one for Zoey. He's her best friend, he truly cares for her and apparently he's ripped too. Zoey couldn't help checking him out when she saw him shirtless. So I think there will be physical attraction between them. I also think the makeover might help Zoey look at Max differently. He definitely cleaned up good in that suit at the party. But also, we saw how Max went the extra mile to help Zoey when her dad fell. He definitely proved that he would truly be there for Zoey and cares about her which is very important. I loved the serenade of the song "500 miles" at the end. So touching. And I think Zoey really noticed too.

The engagement mural going up in flames is a bad omen. Simon and Jessica's marriage is literally going up in smoke before it even begins. Ouch.

From next week's trailer, it appears that Zoey will tell Max about her superpower. I hope he is understanding and does not freak out. I really don't want the show the drag on the "will they, won't they" between Zoey and Max too much.

Max had been friend zoned for years, and he's too much of a wuss to kick his way out.

Zoey doesn't need a man, and she doesn't need that man in particular, because he's a coward.

He did not seem like a wuss when he commandeered the scooter to take Zoey home.

I really think that the shirtless scene + the scooter scene are the first steps towards getting Max out of the friend zone. Zoey sees a guy who is ripped and who took charge of the situation when she was in need. Those two things are very anti-friend zone.

The only reason she likes him is because she magically found out that he likes her, and he may only like her when she doesn't like him.

Her love is inauthentic.

Also, she couldn't learn to tolerate a hairy little belly, and her love will only persist so long as he is fit?

They are approaching 30.

Its like puberty 2.

Stuff starts to change for the worse.

Ducky wound up with Meemaw.

MEEMAW WOUND UP WITH LEX LUTHOR!!!!

So you want Zoey to be a home wrecker and be with Simon? Or do you want Zoey to find someone else, not Max or Simon?

Last night's episode kinda rubbed me the wrong way. I have mixed feelings about it. On one hand, it makes total sense that Max would be skeptical since superpowers don't exist in the real world. Certainly, if your friend told you some story about having imaginary superpowers when you confessed your love for them, it would be only natural that you would assume they are making up total BS because they are too afraid to talk about the feelings you have for them. Also, Zoey really was dumb spending half the episode trying to convince Max that her superpower was real instead of just talking to him about his feelings. And they Zoey confesses to setting up Max on a date when she first learned about his feelings? Yeah, that's not going to backfire (sarcasm). Huge mistake! Also, she probably should not have told him about her superpower to begin with. Think about how people will react, Zoey! At least, she did finally come around to talking to him about it at the end. Zoey is clearly someone who is not comfortable talking about feelings in general. She is an introvert who likes to focus on logical problems. It's why she works as a coder at a software company. She is definitely not good with her superpower. It is really stretching her outside her comfort zone. But it means we have to watch Zoey be super dumb in every episode.

But the part that annoys me is the obvious "will they, won't they" drama. I know why shows do it. But I find it to be a very annoying trope. It requires that characters suddenly act dumb or rude just to drag on the drama some more.

And what is with Simon asking Max if he and Zoey were ever a thing. So Simon is of course secretly interested in Zoey?

Also, Lief and Joan, his boss, are secretly hooking up now? Yikes.

It's just occurred to me this show has resurrected some trust in some artist people had soured on. Two of the producers were the Discovery season 1 showrunners who got fired for being abusive or sucking and maybe both. Also Paul Feig who made the lousy 2016 Ghostbusters movie. Now I just hope it gets a second season. I heard the ratings were bad but maybe they are good with the right demographics.

This was a pretty momentous episode. Zoey is losing her father soon. The last scene with her singing to hr dad was very touching. Plus, we got a neat reversal of Zoey's power where she is singing and others can hear her inner thoughts. It was nice that basically Max got a taste of what her power is like. Hopefully, it gives him more empathy for what Zoey is going through. It was also nice that Zoey's secrets all came out. Max knows that Zoey wants to be him but also knows about her crush on Simon too. And once again, Max proves to be a good friend.

Well, that was a great season finale. We all knew that Zoey's dad was going to pass away but the episode handled it incredibly well. It was respectful, emotional and very appropriate. It was so touching to see Zoey dance with her dad. The final song was perfect on many layers. The words "the day the music died" of course references the dad dying but it could also serve as a metaphor for the season ending or even the series ending too. In some ways, this could have been a series finale although I hope it does get renewed.

I also loved the "hook up" scene between Zoey and Max. It was funny how Zoey kept hearing Max's heart song that interrupted the moment. First it was a tender love song, then when she asks him to think of something more sexy, he goes into a very sexy, raunchy latin song. I still love Max and Zoey. They just look great together.

Also, did anyone find the brief scene with the MRI weird? The tech says that the machine helps a lot of people which of course is just a reference to the machine helping people who are sick. But then the tech hums the song "I got the music in me" which is the same song that Zoey was singing in her dream earlier the season. How could the tech be humming that song? Is it hinting at something more about that technician or the MRI?
