Zero-ing on what made TOS so great.

By going right through it? They are destroying it and recreating it - resynthesizing it - ressurecting it, with the same piece of cloth. I hope they don't turn beautiful material into a bib for the kids. The problem with TOS was not the universe, the characters or the production values so changing them means nothing - Great story - great music - great chemistry. The rest is meaningless. But details and vision are a must and are the universe itself and must be artistic. I've liked everything I've seen thus far though.

Optimism. O-P-T-I-M-I-S-M. Optimism. Things are OK. Problems can be solved. People are bascially, OK. The human race can make its own way. It was a refreshing and close to unique premise for an action-adventure show, especially for its genre. I hope most of all that Abrams caught that feeling. Nothing about TOS was ever dark, brooding, or ironic.

Except for "The City On The Edge Of Forever." And "Charlie X." Oh - and "Dagger Of The Mind" and "Conscience Of The King" and "What Are Little Girls Made Of?" and...

Never mind. What really made TOS so great were the trousers. They were, uh, they were very, uhm... tight.

Well, yeah, it was action and adventure, and it had a variety themed episodes. But overall, darkness was not the feeling the show conveyed. This was still a world one wanted to live in. I usually don't get so abstract and dewy-eyed poetic about a show that ultimately was about doing what was necessary to attract viewers and sponsors, but I guess it's what attracted me to the show in the first place, so I stick to it.

What makes TOS great is that it does the hero of the 60's style so well. I mean, Captain Kirk is the James Bond of space. He's handsome, suave, a ladies' man (with a different one in every episode). He punches/shoots first and then asks questions later, and his array of cool gadgets is impressive (big starship, phaser guns, communicators, etc).

The friendship portrayed by the big three also comes into play. It makes the characters likeable. When your series has made the viewer genuinely like your characters, then your series has a huge chance of success just based on that.

I think people just tuned in because they liked the commercials.

The movie won't have any until it airs on TV.

It will thus fail until the TV showing, which will get the highest ratings ever seen on TV. People in other countries will even watch by stealing the satellite signal. The network will be flooded with phone calls demanding several re-showings.

A new series with the original characters will thus be lanuched, and the first network exec who tries to schedule it for 10PM Friday will die under mysterious circumstances, possibly involving his peers.

The show will last seven years, and be deliberately brought to an end so's to go out while it's still flying high.

Several years later an attempt to revive it will be nearly derailed when Quinto refuses to return to the Spock role. In Spock's place will be, of course, Xon, with Will Decker being played by the former child star of Two And A Half Men. Pine will be going bald and be wearing a bad hairpiece...and a girdle.

People will complain about the Enterprise having been altered to have, among other changes, red nacelle caps.

The show will last another five years, before being replaced by a new Trek universe show taking place further into the future, on the Enterprise-C. Captain Garret will be played by one of the Olsen twins.

yea, but bond will do anything to win. Kirk has to be a paragon of virtue and an ambassador. Pine looks like your typical Commander Bowman except one who is willing to twist the rules which I think is a mistake to start off with even though he bent rules later on but not for his own sake.

Zero-ing on what made TOS so great.

What made TOS so great? Nothing began in zero. Unfortunately for this thread, its title starts with zero, and is therefore a violation of my personaly canon.

Good day, folks.
