your top ten favorite TV characters (currently running series)

Temis the Vorta

Fleet Admiral
Admiral
Just for series that are still running and (as far as you know) uncancelled. And spoiler code any specific plot elements that are less than a year old to avoid any bickering in this thread... ;)

1. Dexter Morgan - Incredible performance by Michael C. Hall plus the fun of seeing someone who has created his own alternate moral universe, the embodiment of the Mythbuster's motto: I Reject Your Reality and Substitute My Own. That's the spirit! :techman:

2. Kara "Starbuck" Thrace - Headcase? Prophet? Sometimes hard to take, but always entertaining. Great performance by Katee Sackhoff.

3. Peter Petrelli - Sure, he's an emo twit and unfortunately subject to dumbed-down writing at times, but he's still a great example of that winning normal-person-gets-superpowers Spider-Man archetype.

4. Sam "C-Buck" Anders - Much more interesting now that his Big Secret is out; my favorite Cylon by far. Who doesn't love a Sexy Tragic Robot(TM)?

5. Ari Gold - How can you not love this complete maniac? A great example of how to make an unappetizing character weirdly charismatic. Jeremy Piven deserves his shelf-ful of Emmys.

6. Sayid Jarrah - Just too cool, a complex, level-headed but still mysterious character who manages to stay grounded amidst insanity.

7. James "Sawyer" Ford - Funny as hell, smarter and crazier than he seems, always entertaining.

8. Matt Parkman - The other great normal-person-gets-superpowers character from Heroes. At this point, I'd watch the show for Peter and Matt alone.

9. Ned - The Pushing Daisies cast is probably the strongest on TV overall - they all belong on Top Ten lists - but Ned is the heart and soul of the show, and the character who most of all keeps me watching.

10. Cameron aka Rivernator aka Cam-bot - We've all seen any number of attempts by actors to portray robots, but Summer Glau ranks right up there with the best. Simultaneously deadly and deadpan funny.

And yes it's true, Gabriel "Sylar" Gray failed to make the list, despite my penchant for characters with nicknames. I'll see how things shape up for him in S3.

1. The Doctor - He's witty, fun, and kind of an ass. Still, I would put my life in his hands any time.

2. Kara Thrace - I'm not liking Starbuck this year as much as other years (I am finding the angst kind of annoying) but Katee Sackhoff has played the character so well that she is my favorite actress

3. Nathen Petrelli - It seems people forget about him, but he was one of the only interesting things of Heroes last season.

4. Admiral Adama - EJO is such a great character that he has made Adama just a hella cool character.

5. Captain Jack Harkness - He actually calmed down some this season. I still didn't see the comic side of him, but we kind of got a glimpse of why he is who he is.

6. Chef Gordon Ramsey - Ok, so it's reality, but I have to wonder if he is really like this in Real life. I mean you have different people who have to get "in character" and I think Ramsey is one of them. That, and I'm realizing I don't watch as many shows as I thought.

That's pretty much it for me. Kind of wish I watched other shows like Dexter, but I don't get showtime.

1. Dexter Morgan - of all the TV shows I've watched, I've never identified as strongly with a protagonist as I do with Dexter. I wonder why that is; certainly it's not as straightforward as the fact he's a serial killer. Maybe it's forced adherence to social norms and dryly black wit, which make him so easy to empathise which and to find entertaining.

... that's about it. Don't watch much TV, even less that is still on the air.

Note I was trying to pick my favourites from all the shows I watch, but I decided I actually like the last four characters too much to not pick them over, say Jack Harkness from Torchwood or Jonas from Bionic Woman...

In no particular order...

Dr. Gregory House (House MD)
Dr. Perry Cox (Scrubs)
Dr. Rodney McKay (Stargate: Atlantis)
Ned (Pushing Daisies)

A pretty small list, but then again, there aren't many shows that are currently on-air that I watch. If we included any shows, my list would continue to be dominated by snarky doctors (ie, Hawkeye and Trapper and more that I can't think of at this very moment).
