Your postmortem thoughts on DISCO

I don’t think Stacy Abrams’ cameo led to the cancellation of Trek. Might have peeved off Ted Cruz, but as someone living in Texas, I really don’t give a shit about him.
Not directly, but the attitude that "i can live without them just fine" and it's ok to continuously alienate large portions of potential new fans did.

I know the prince of Jordan appeared once in VOY, but he was a background extra with no speaking part. That's different than a speaking role.
I think the then Prince was given a part because he was a huge Star Trek fan. It had to be non-verbal because the Prince didnt have a SAG credential.

True, and that's still pretty cool.

I'm certain there are more politicians that are ST fans. I was surprised an active politician was given a speaking role, though.

Im surprised such a divisive figure was given such a role.

Mayor Koch was in a handful of TV shows ( Spin City if i recall correctly ). Maybe it's a difference in the times, but he had a funny role that added to the episode.

That’s what I figured. Divisive by a specific subset of viewers, not universally.
My "subset" is just as large as your group.
And if Disco had focused on quality story telling instead of chosen family, maybe it leads Paramount + as the lead of a much stronger Star Trek franchise.

Star Trek has always been in opposition to most rightwing ideologies. If being presented repeatedly with the virtues of equality regarding race, gender, sexuality, belief, birthplace and social status, and the opposition of those who support war, bigotry, oppression, greed, isolationism and generalisation didn't already alienate certain elements I hardly see how a 3 minute cameo could do it.

Didn't do it for me.

Though I'm of the belief that equality is essential aspect of society that should be fought for, and oppose war, greed, bigotry and oppression despite being more right of center. Never felt those were exclusive to one side.

My two cents about Stacey Abrams...

I doubt that Abrams's inclusion alienated many people, because I suspect that people who find Abrams divisive already were not looking at Discovery by the fourth season. By that time, the culture wars had already ripped it apart.

I do find Abrams mildly divisive and did not find the inclusion distracting. Truly honestly I found the Rock's inclusion more distracting.

I tried to like it. I watched season 1 and couldn't go on. After around a year I thought I would give it another go. And sat down to binge 2-4. Managed up to the end of season 3 then gave up. It just wasn't for me.
And I've never given up on any ST show up to that point, I've liked them all. Then Starfleet Academy came along, I only lasted 2 episodes of that. Kurtzman Trek just isn't for me I guess.

Did you not find anything to like in Picard, Strange New Worlds, Lower Decks, or Prodigy?
A couple of episodes from season 1 of SNW were okay. And I thought Picard season 3 was the best of the lot. Though I'm not sure how much input Kurtzman had to that season. I'm thinking very little.

As with most executive producers, Kurtzman would have final say over the showrunner.

Just like Rick Berman had with Ira Behr on DS9.

Just like Gene Roddenberry had with Gene Coon on TOS.

It’s a complete misunderstanding of how television works to allege otherwise.
