I was born in 1989 so just old enough to have had an NES as my first console. I still play NES games today

Playing Super Mario Bros 8 at the moment.
It's a romhack of Super Bros 8, one of the MANY Russian bootleg/reskins that were doing the rounds in the 90's (and live on forever on those bootleg handheld systems on AliExpress, Temu and elsewhere), which updates the sprites, rewrites the story and turns the whole thing into a more legitimate-seeming Mario game. The original game was the Japan-exclusive Don Doko Don 2. It's pretty fun, and does indeed feel like a lost Mario game.

One of my fav nes games, inspired some of my other favorite games
Captain Skyhawk!! That game is one of the best games ever with awesome music. The sped up levels, oh man, playing those for the first time without being ready….Lol

Castlevania 3: Dracula's Curse was about as epic a game as there was on NES.
Smashing controllers while enduring the frustration of playing Ninja Gaiden on NES is another classic memory.
getting nearly catatonic from playing Konami's "Life Force"
there were some under the radar gems such as Strider, Blaster Master, Syndicate (which was a clone of the arcade game "Rolling Thunder"
Rygar, although you couldn't save and had to put the game on pause overnight to stop playing (and hope like hell that the power didn't go out!!)
Golgo13 was one of the few games that combined different modes of game play: side scrolling, driving and first person shooting
Section Z. At first was confusing as hell, as you were going in circles
but then when you realized Capcom included a paper map of all the sections and connecting tunnels, it became a pretty solid game
another under the radar game was Konami's "Lone Ranger" which combined side scrolling and RPG elements with first person shooting (using the light gun), damn fun actually
and of course the original Metal Gear
I'd say that Konami and Capcom "owned" the NES as they seemed to put out the highest quality games
