Your Last Great Thrill

Many recent SCIFI films have fallen short. WAR OF THE WORLDS, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, and others, have just not been that good. Even ones not based on previous movies (THE ISLAND) among others....when was the last time you came out of a scifi film and said "THAT was a great film"...I don't mean good..I mean GREAT movie....

I'd say Revenge of the Sith marked the end of event movies. Since then... Dead Man's Chest really blew me away, and Transformers was a lot cooler than I expected.

I agree with you on TRANSFORMERS. I never watched the cartoon so I had no idea what to expect. But it was actually quite entertaining. I think the last time I was actually floored was the first Matrix, and the year before that, DARK CITY.

The Matrix. I went into it completely unspoiled and blind. It was the last film I can remember having a truly "wow" moment, as I did upon discovering what the matrix actually was.

Serenity. I thought the film was so good, i turned back around, bought another ticket and watched it again.

Transformers. I don't care what anybody says. If that movie were a woman, I'd marry her.

For me it would be Wall-E. So not that long ago.

Even though I wasn't crazy about all the wacky adventures on the ship, the stuff at the beginning and end was so compelling and magical that I was still blown away by the experience.

The last great movie I saw was on DVD - The Twilight Samurai - not at all what you'd expect from a "Japanese samurai flick" - but very involving.

And right before that, I saw Stagecoach for the first time. One of those "now I know why that's a classic" movies.

OK not very sci fi of me - I guess the last really great sci fi movie I saw was WALL*E and a little before that, Iron Man. I usually just see the best of the summer blockbusters in the theater and catch everything else on DVD.

For me, I'd say the last big, majestic SF/F film for me was Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. Granted, it's such a dense plot it took me a few tries to absorb it all. Still, that is a BIG movie!

Of course, The Dark Knight was even bigger. But I don't count that as SF/F.

Probably the last one that I truly entered into and left with a 100% positive attitude was Superman Returns.

Although, I hope that I'll have similar experiences with Star Trek XI & Terminator Salvation this summer.

As others have said...

- The Matrix... Woah
- The Fellowship of the Ring... From the prologoue, 3+ hours of awesomeness

And most recently, even though it is only barely SF/F:
- The Prestige... really blew me away

Serenity, because I couldn't believe something like that had been accomplished again after TMP.

I enjoyed Transformers, but I was pissed drunk at the time and while I'm a fan of the franchise (excepting all that anime garbage), it was a pretty stupid movie. I'm surprised that so many people are wowed by it.
