Your favorite rendition of your national anthem?

Hearing Jennifer Hudson's very good version of "The Star Spangled Banner" at the Super Bowl got me thinking about the song; and how for me, no one has come close to Whitney Houston's performance of the song at Super Bowl 25, 18 years ago.

That said, what is your favorite version of your countries' national anthem?

It's a sort of a tradition in Ireland that you play the national anthem at the end of any night of music and carousing. (It's less common now than it was, but still done in certain kinds of pubs.)

There was a pub in Dublin that regularly finished up the night by having everyone stand to attention, and then mosh to a rock version of the anthem. You haven't properly experienced your anthem until you've moshed to it, imo. Alas, I cannot seem to find a recording of it online. :(

You hit it on the head, there. WH was amazing. And the "missing man" Air Force fly bye as she finished brought a tear to my eye...

For me, it's a tie between Jimi Hendrix and Marvin Gaye...and Leslie Nielsen in The Naked Gun. :D

I can't remember which sporting event it was, but I remember Boys II Men doing an awesome version of the national anthem (U.S.). It may have been the Olympics in '96. I dunno.

It's not my favorite, but Jewel's rendition during the Super Bowl got some uptight lady to write a letter to Parade Magazine asking who the loser was who tried to make the national anthem sexy. That right there gets Jewel some kudos.

The Dixie Chicks' rendition in 2003 (Super Bowl) was my favorite. Very nice harmonies.

Indeed. I've always been a big fan of them, one of the few performers I've gone to visit in concert.

Beautiful performance of the National Anthem.

And, yes, their "harmonies" are nice. ;)

Why doesn't that suprise me that you're a fan of traitors?

The PBS station in Tallahassee used to sign off with the fourth verse being sung by a female vocalist with acoustic guitar. Kinda folky sounding, but I really liked it since you so rarely hear anything other than the first verse.

O! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: 'In God is our trust.'
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave![

Jimi at Woodstock.
That, and I have a version played by Ingve Malmstein.

In what manner are they traitors?

That they had the audacity to question their government's leadership that they did not agree with?

Ted Nugent came to town in 2003 and he called Natalie Mayes every filthy name in the book at the concert. I loved it! Larry the Cableguy also said, "The Dixie Chicks are great singers, but that little fat one needs to shut the hell up." Now that's funny!

I recall listening to a wonderful symphonic-only rendition of Fratelli d'Italia during one of New Year's concerts some years ago. Instead of the usual "marching song" tempo, it was played as a broad and deeply moving tune. Damn me if I can find it, but it was a thing of beauty.
