Your favorite non main-stream car?

And by non main-stream I mean not Mustang, Camaro, etc. I'm looking for those cars that a little more off the "beaten path" those cars no one ever mentions and when they do you say, "Oh yeah! That is a nice car!"

For me its the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia.

I don't know what it is, it's just a nifty looking car. :)

The original Oldsmobile Aurora. Not sure what it is about it, but it just has a really nice and clean body style to it.

The Chevy El Camino, circa 1984-1987. My first car was an '87 like the above, but in baby blue (no two-tone), handed down to me from my dad and kept in show room condition. I have an irrational sentimental attachment to this particular model of car.

A car that works, has few problems, a good reputation for not having to be brought in every five months. So, basically ... that's against the main stream, which includes anything "shinny", "fast", and with a model year that hasn't even started.

Way to join the thread!

Cornholio beat me to it. Love that car. It was my favourite to drive when I used to play Test Drive Unlimited.

I will go for the obvious Italian choices and say:

the new Fiat 500 (sweet, perky little ride)

the Alfa Romeo Mito (compact with a lot of chutzpah about her)

and crossing the borders, the BMW 1 Series (elegant and muscular):

Finally, I cannot help but love the Smart Roadster (what can I say, fuck me sideways):

I have a couple in the family fleet right now. I have a 1974 Pontiac Grand Am that I bought new 36 years ago. Only 5600 were made that year. The daily driver is a '99 Ford Contour SVT of which only 2760 were made. I plan to keep 'em both 'til I croak. Maybe someone more savvy can dig up some online photos.

'71 Olds Cutlass Convertible. First car I ever owned until it got stolen at school. I loved that car, and it was powerful as hell. Mine was green though.

My dad always talked about getting one of those and he never did.

I've always been partial to the 66-76 Ford Bronco

Right before we bought our first house, I found one in great condition that I could have paid cash for. My wife wanted a house.

I'm still looking for one in as good condition.

A guy I know owns a Lada Niva. I don't like SUVs, but that's a really nice car and incredibly practical. It even gets ok gas mileage since it's not excessively overpowered (but still gets up literally any hill without a problem).

^ We used to have one of those. It is great for off-roading, however as an actual car it's a POS.
